Cinco de Mayo celebration at Museo Mayahuel (Image by: David Alvarez)

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the United States more than it is in Mexico. Celebrations were held throughout Sacramento, I made a visit to the Tequila Museo Mayahuel. The restaurant-bar-tequila museum is located at 1200 K Street and it held its Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday night.

The Tequila Museo Mayahuel was packed early and it stayed open later than usual. I’m not a tequila connoisseur and for people like me there were many more choices to choose from if you wanted a drink. I did try some shots since I didn’t want to be rude or anything.

A giant blown-up Corona beer bottle (a universally known icon that means there’s a party going on near-by) was at the front of Mayahuel.

A friend of owner Ernesto Delgado had been playing the piano for a while. After his gig he sat by the door and we chatted for a while. Ruben Hurtado had provided some of the musical entertainment playing piano and doing vocals.

Will Rodriguez, Art Director of Umbrella Haus, played DJ and entertained the audience as well. He had already been at Mayahuel for a while and continued to spin Latin beats for the occasion. Clemon Charles was also on hand providing lighting for the entertainment.

I’m not sure how many people fit in the place but there were easily a couple of hundred in the two main rooms and in a beer garden. Delicious food was also being served and the owner Ernesto Delgado was on hand to greet guests and oversee the festivities. Tequila Maestro Don Luis Navarro was also on hand but I did not get a chance to speak with either one but may schedule something at a later time.

A six member mariachi band calling themselves Mariachi Latino serenaded guests as the crowd grew by the minute. After playing a couple of songs by the entrance they moved towards the back of the main room.

Trumpets started off a much familiar song played at many Mexican baptisms, birthdays, quinceañeras and weddings. If the crowd was not loud before, they were after the mariachis started to play Volver Volver. The party was officially on! Mexican ballads become even that much more popular after a few drinks and as such a few gathered around the mariachis and joined them. The celebration continued and after sampling a few shots I hailed a taxi and concluded my celebration.

The week-long celebration continues on Friday with Recovery day. A day to enjoy micheladas, bloody Mary’s, menudo and pozole to cure hangovers. Saturday’s festivities are for the family as it concludes with Dia de la Familia.
