More than just a sales tax increase

Back in February Gov. Schwarzenegger and the legislature passed a state budget that included a temporary one-cent hike in the state sales tax, well now the time has come to pay up. On April 1st the one-cent-on-the-dollar increase will take effect and will expire on either July 1, 2011, or July 1, 2012 depending on voter’s approval of the proposed Budget Stabilization constitutional amendment in a statewide election to be held on May 19, 2009.

If Proposition 1A, also known as the Spending Cap Amendment passes on May 19th, more than sales taxes will be raised. Expect to see an additional 5% surcharge on state income taxes, an increase in the vehicle-license fee from 0.65% to 1.15%, $15 billion reduction in government spending, including $8.6 billion from education, and an elimination of two state holidays for state workers to enjoy. The deal also includes automatic spending restraints and new powers for governors to cut programs whenever the state falls into the red. If passed it would raise more than $5 billion per year. So far, no coordinated opposition has formed against 1A, but labor unions are discussing whether to mount an attack against the proposition.

Now we all get to pay for the mistakes our legislators have been making over the years. For years and years out state legislators have tried to fill budget gaps buy borrowing money in bonds, but now the state is in such a financial mess with lots of debt and a downgraded bond rating to the lowest in the nation that they have no choice but to get their house in order to attract investors.

sure, our government has been acting irreversibility, but so have we. every election cycle the people pass new bond measures for schools, transit, and health care. i love the bullet trains and small class rooms as much as the next guy, but the propositions rarely stipulate how new revenue will be raised to compensate for the state's increased debt. it's time we decided if we want to pay more in taxes for more services or pay less in taxes for less services.

"an elimination of two state holidays for state workers to enjoy." music to my ears! Less fake holidays = welcome to the real world state 'workers'

I guess I'll be taking a government/PoliSci class because I don't understand this.
How can a tax be implimented if the people did not vote?

Why can't the legislators take a pay cut - We didn't vote for their raises. Shouldn't they be given a salary cap...like $60K? That's a fair income. It's more than three times the amount that I'm expected to live off of with unemployment and I'm a single parent - we live very moderately. In fact, I'm drying laundry on a clothesline to save money on my SMUD bill.

Why should any government employee including the legislators take a pay cut when we THE IDIOT VOTERS keep raising taxes so they can increase their salaries and provide less and less services.

Teachers take 6 year olds to Sacramento to carry picket signs, college students that are too lazy to work and pay for their education carry picket signs. After all, everything is SUPPOSED TO BE FREE, RIGHT????

Hussein Obama PROMISED - Free Education, Free Food, Free Housing, Free money to pay off credit cards, etc... Where are all the freebies that Hussein promised?

Oh, wait, he has to pay off the Radical Middle Eastern Muslims that PURCHASED the whitehouse for him and the Clintons. He also had to pay off Freddie & Fannie execs that "donated to his cause to get elected". And he has to pay off all the Welfare, Mafia (Labor Union) and Illegals that voted for him.

How much money is ACORN getting?
