Mexican Tacos with Korean flair are coming to the corner of 15th and L streets as GoGi’s Korean BBQ is opening Tuesday in the former “Park To Go” kiosk.
“GoGi’s tacos is a cross between Mexican and Korean taco stands,” said Executive Chef Christian Palmos. “Since there are no taco trucks allowed downtown, it’s a great location.”
Palmos said many of the restaurants in the area are more upscale, and he thinks the takeaway food – with patio seating available – will be a good fit.
“It’s great food at a great price, and we’re giving the first taco for free opening week,” he said.
Tacos – made with Korean barbecue beef short rib, spicy pork, chicken or tofu – will cost $2, and burritos will cost $5. All beverages – are $2 as well.
“Every taco truck has its own unique flavor,” Palmos said. “In our building, our flavor is a blend of a Mexican taco with a Korean flair.”
That flavor comes from things like the Korean barbecue sauce and kimchi cole slaw, he added.
Palmos’ chef experience has been with the Paragary Restaurant Group, Paul Martin’s, Lemon Grass and La Bou.
“I think we’re the first ones to open up a street-fare taco business in a building here,” he said.
“Gogi” is the Korean word for beef, and co-owner Alan Wong said he expects the aroma of cooking the meat to bring customers to the business.
“It’s the first one in Sacramento, but they’re really popular in other cities like L.A., San Francisco and Oakland,” he said.
Wong owns the business with his brothers, Mason and Curtis. They also own The Park Ultra Lounge, Cafeteria 15L and Ma Jong’s on the same corner.
“We’re natives of Sacramento, and together we have a century of restaurant experience,” Alan Wong said.
He said opening the business during an economic downturn didn’t cause him any hesitation.
“I have no concerns. With $2 tacos and $5 burritos, it’s good value for what you get – good food and a quality product,” he said.
Currently, the business’ hours are from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, but Palmos said that within a couple of weeks, it will open for late-night service on Fridays and Saturdays at hours still to be determined.
Alan Wong said all the food is made from scratch, and so are some of the drinks, including the GoGi’s lemonade.
