There are not many restaurants in Sacramento where bicycle wheels spin above the bartenders and the menus are printed on the back of old record covers.
Spin Burger offers this and more at its new location at K and 16th streets.
Replacing Bistro 33, Spin Burger has been open since Nov. 26, and General Manager Brian Spence said business is doing well.
“Lunch is picking up, which is what we wanted, and the night life is about the same,” he said.
The menu features customizable hamburgers as well as garden, buffalo, ostrich or poultry burgers. Other options include such items as shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, chili, fries and macaroni and cheese. For dessert, there is a Nutella milkshake, root beer float, chocolate peanut butter pastries and vanilla ice cream, which comes with a slice of apple pie, in a bowl or on a cone. The fully loaded hamburgers go for less than $10, desserts are around $5 and appetizers cost between $3 for potato salad and $10 for the shrimp plate.
The full bar features beers on tap, wine and a selection of cocktails. Happy hour features $3.50 well drinks and $2 drinks that change each day of the week (Sierra Nevada on Fridays, Stella Artois on Saturday) from 4 - 7 p.m.
First-time customer Shaun Tapia gave his buffalo burger a thumbs-up. He commented about the decorations, wondering what bicycles have to do with burgers but said that he liked that it felt “very Midtown-y.”
DJ Eddie Z performs on Friday and Saturday nights, when the restaurant is open until 3 a.m. to catch the late-night downtown crowd. He said, “The crowd is good. I love the location – it’s a hub of foot traffic.”
This weekend will be DJ Eddie Z’s second visit and Spin Burger’s third weekend of business. With televisions tuned to sports channels and the radio playing retro hip-hop and bikes hung on the wall, the restaurant aims to please a variety of people.
Bartender Angelica Marquis, who previously worked at Bistro 33 in Davis, said she loves Spin Burger because, “It’s a fresh idea. It’s got good atmosphere.”
The crowd, she said, is young and relaxed. “There’s a lot of fun to be had here,” she said before asking Spence to switch on the motorized revolving bike wheels above the bar, just one of many details that add to Spin Burger’s urban charm.
Spin Burger is located at 1020 16th St.
