After having their opening date pushed back, the three establishments on the 1000 block of K Street are on track to open by New Year’s, if not before then.

“We think we can have them open before Christmas,” said Russ Conley, superintendent for Terra Nova industries.

Conley said power has been supplied to the three businesses and that working with SMUD was a breeze.

Construction was delayed due to an unstable electrical vault under the property.

The three business concepts include a "mermaid bar," a gourmet pizza restaurant with acrobatic pizza tossers and a high-end, over-30 dance club to further develop K Street Mall into an entertainment district and to bring people from as far away as the Sierra Nevada foothills.

The project is the work of San Francisco nightclub operator George Karpaty.

Inside Pizza Rock, the big rig has been installed above the bar area.

Art on the ceiling recalls Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel piece, but with a guitar being handed over in lieu of the moment of creation.

It really takes a concept like this to make it happen. If the development team didn't do something extraordinary, it wouldn't draw. this project will draw and be the additional spark K Street needs!

As I see it, If D&S Development gets their project off the ground on the south side of the 700 Block, then all that is left to improve is the south side of the 800 block. Petrovich Development has taken care of the north side of the 800 block by completely renovating the historic Hale building (Rite Aid is in the ground floor). Petrovich Development has moved into a portion of the Hale Building, and is looking to lease up additional space. The building is walking distance to the Capitol. Also, Petrovich added parking below the building for the tenants that end up leasing space there. www.Baconcre.com/blog

This guy George Karpaty knows what he's doing. Not tacky. Wait till you see it in person. He absolutely knows how to throw a party.

While I think it's great that new businesses are opening on K Street, I'm not impressed by the gimmicks being used to lure customers. The big rig reminds me of a restaurant on Fair Oaks Boulevard that had 1950s cars coming out of the walls. The first visit was fun, but after that...yawn. It didn't last long, and I can't even remember what it was called. Good quality, fair prices and a comfortable atmosphere will attract repeat customers. Mermaids and acrobatic pizza-flippers and big rigs will attract curiosity seekers - once.

I commend ANYONE who is willing to take a chance on this area...and put their money on the line for a better downtown that attracts beer-buying, tip-leaving customers. For all I care, they can have whatever they want coming out of the walls. I just hope that the customers don't recede back into the woodwork. It's a two-way street. Citizens have to start supporting small business in downtown, even if it means paying a little more than they would at the big boxes or chains. Spread the wealth!
