Are you ready for some women's football?

Even though the Sacramento Sirens, the local professional woman’s football team, doesn't kick off the new season until next April or so, like any pro sports team, they’re working year-round to put a better product on the field.

On Saturday, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4, the Sirens will hold tryouts for next year’s team of prospective football players and future superstars of the gridiron at Will Rogers Jr. High School. Will Rogers is located at 4924 Dewey Drive in Fair Oaks.

After 10 years of banging helmets in Sacramento, several of the longtime stalwarts are retiring this season, which will open up many new spots on the team for prospective players. The Sirens encourage all who think they may have the talent, can catch a football or can just flat-out run really fast to come out and see if they have what it takes to be a professional female football player.

Those making the team will get to join last year’s national championship runner-up and help the Sirens build momentum to make that championship game again. Last year, the Sirens had an undefeated regular season, going 10-0 until finally losing in the title game to the Boston Militia 39-7 in July.

Each year, Championship Weekend is held in Round Rock, Texas, the headquarters of the IWFL, the association in which the Sirens play.

Tryouts will be held rain or shine with the registration process starting at 9 a.m. followed by tryouts at 10 a.m. Attendees will need to bring their own athletic clothes, water and cleats.

There is no football experience required. Registration forms can be found online here. The cost of registration is $40 and covers multiple tryouts if needed, as some may want to see if they can better their previous times. All ladies participating will need to provide a health insurance card before the tryout.

Also on the agenda for the Sirens is a fundraising event put on by the ICUP Comedy Troupe this Friday. The laughs start at 8 p.m. and will be held at 6921 Sylvan Rd. in Citrus Heights. All funds collected will go to support the 2010-11 Sirens season.

For more information about the tryouts or anything else Sirens, call Brenda Whitten at (916) 722-6432 or visit the Sirens website here.
