Lisa Kron’s “Well” will debut this Sunday at B Street Theatre. The play has been well-received across the country, and now director Jerry Montoya will present his rendition of Kron’s autobiographical production for Sacramento.
“When I read it for the first time I was constantly surprised,” Elisabeth Nunziato said. She will be playing the role of Lisa Kron. “The way it’s written, you will have to ask yourself: Okay, in what universe are we now? And as the story seems to unravel, it all ends up coming together in the end.”
The play, which is about Kron’s relationship with her mother, illness and the community, is designed to break the fourth wall, which means it acknowledges the audience rather than only performing for them.
The audience is often addressed by the performers, who, in this particular piece, are actually “actors playing themselves who are playing characters,” Nunziato said.
The play is designed so that everyone except Kron emphasizes his or her role as an actor fulfilling a role in the autobiography.
“I’m the only actor playing another character,” Nunziato said, as she will be performing as Lisa Kron. “It sounds tricky. The best part about this, if we do it well, is that it will be a fun challenge for the audience.
“The audience can’t get bored because the story keeps evolving,” she said.
This six-person show shares similarities to Kron’s other autobiographical work, yet this is the first of her plays to feature other characters aside from herself. What drew the B Street Theatre to this production was its emphasis on connecting with the audience, which is what Nunziato said is one of the company’s specialties.
Directed by Jerry Montoya, the play also features Tony D’Juan, Jason Kuykendall, Polly Adams, Shanel Moore and Amy Kelly. It premieres at 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available here.
