Since 2007, when Culinary Institute of America honors graduate Ginger Elizabeth Hahn transitioned her 2-year-old Sacramento chocolate-making business from wholesale to retail, the Camino native has been wowing the cocoa-craving public with her always-from-scratch, all-natural, palate-pleasing confections.

For the past eight months, Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates, 1801 L St., has been offering semi-regular “Cupcake Day” events, when she adds a quartet of divine chocolate-heavy varieties for sale to those who can’t get enough of her many shades of brown.

This past Saturday, Cupcake Day featured two usual suspects: Hahn’s “Real Red Velvet Cupcake” and her “Salty Caramel Cupcake,” as well as a “Sliced Pumpkin Cupcake” and a “S’More Cupcake.”

Though some 2,000 cupcakes were freshly baked that day, the pumpkin and s’more varieties were sold out less than halfway through the day – disappointing more than a few customers who crowded the intimate L Street shop.

Among those patiently queuing up to purchase one of the $3 cupcakes was Andy Latorie, whose wife discovered Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates three years ago. Though the couple lives in Rio Linda, Latorie said the drive is worth it for Hahn’s salty caramel macarons alone.

“All their stuff is great,” Latorie said. “We will travel for good food.”

“Cupcake Day” heralds a busy fall season for Hahn, who will be hosting a “Dark vs. Dark Chocolate Tasting” from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at the L Street Lofts Penthouse, and who will be the guest speaker at the Sacramento Living Library at 7 p.m. Dec. 5.

Barry, did you try any of the cupcakes yourself?

Sadly, no, because they looked delicious (as did everything in the shop). When I'm not lugging a camera bag, camera and notebook, I'll probably take the plunge!

We need to get you some go-go-gadget arms so that cupcake eating can be multi-tasked with photography :)

You've lost me. I don't see how having a modicum of carry-on accessories can prevent one's eating of sold-out-halfway-through-the-day, drving-from-Rio-Linda-to-get-some cupcakes. Cupcakes are, after all, superior to cake in that their proportions are delicately balanced and personalized. You must have another reason you're not stating - which is fine, understand... but don't feed me this line about the camera bag. It doesn't even make any sense. We want to eat this cupcake vicariously and you've left us on the side of the bed, crying.
(At anonymous thumbs down: obviously this was humor)
