Today plans were submitted by the NBA to totally redo CalExpo and turn it into a mixed use, pedestrian-friendly, and transit oriented regional destination. The plan is to raze all 350 acres and over the next 27 years transform the CalExpo facilities into successful mixed –use development. No source of funding has been found to construct the new CalExpo and make infrastructure improvements for the entire site. There was also no cost given by the NBA as to how much the proposal will cost if the plans are well received and funding can found. Proposed changes to the Cal Expo programs would be ending live horse racing in 2012 and the water park would close in 2016.

By the NBA? With assumptions that the Kings new stadium would be housed there? This reminds me, I have been wanting to visit the harness races.

Great article Michael! I heard the Mayor talk about the presentation at Cal Expo yesterday, but I was not able to attend. Did you attend the presentation and if so, what was it like? Who was the presenter, and were there any other notables?

Mark: Yes the proposal includes "new, state-of-the-art State Fair facilities and NBA arena for entertainment, including the State Fair, professional sproting events, preforming arts, concerts, trade shows, family shows, and other events" and yes, their proposal says "sproting events" as well as "preforming arts".

I was not there so I could not tell you what happen Jonathan. I personally wish they offered two or three different ideas of how CalExpo could be remade.

I don't like this new plan. mixed use residential? Is this supposed to house the Sate Fair? We are facing hard times and budget cuts. Do we need a new park right now? (Do we need a new courthouse?)
