There was a whole lot of prayer, dancing and applauding going on today on the west Capitol steps.

The Call to Conscience was described as spiritual repentance "when there is no hope for a nation."

Evangelical conservative Lou Engle and other pastors and speakers protested gay marriage, pornography and abortion.

A worshipper, with the word "life" printed on tape over her mouth, is part of a grassroots prayer mobilization movement to end abortion.

A man holds his arm above a woman crying as she is held by another.

Worshippers gathered in the grass and sidewalk on the west steps of the Capitol. A big screen is on the right. Big screens were set up along Capitol Mall Blvd on each block. The stage dominated about one-third of the area of the Capitol structure above the steps.

Many prayed with their arms uplifted.

Some prayed with their hands on others.

Money donations were encouraged throughout the day.

Men jump up and down to words and music.

A man and his cross on a wheel.

When this picture was shot, a speaker was announcing that craigslist.com had shut down its adult services section, replacing it with a black bar that simply says "censored." The speaker said that announcement was made public at the same time The Call began its prayer service, implying it was the reason it happened.

The Call was anticipating 50,000 for the event. As of 3pm the Mall corridor was not filled. Numerous pallets of plastic bottles of water baked in the sun throughout the day.  After being chilled in ice coolers, they were handed out to worshippers.

About TheCall (from thecall.com)

TheCall is a FAST not a festival, a SOLEMN ASSEMBLY and not a conference. TheCall is not a Christian entertainment gathering, but a summons to prayer, fasting, repentance and sacrificial worship. TheCall does not advertise bands nor does it promote speakers. It is not about the exaltation of human personalities. It is about exalting the Lord and Him alone.

Our nation is in desperate need of the mercy of God and another great spiritual awakening, which will only come forth as the Body of Christ gathers together in prayer. When there is no hope for a nation, when there is no remedy, God has a Holy prescription. We must drop every barrier that divides us and unite in urgent, humble fasting and prayer with the promise that afterward God would pour out His Spirit (Joel 2).

TheCall is committed to mobilizing three generations, every ethnicity, and every denomination from across America to join in petitioning God for His undeserved mercy and to return to acts of justice that would satisfy His heart.

Our History
In 1997 Promise Keepers hosted one of the largest Christian gatherings in American history. An estimated one million men gathered to the National Mall in Washington DC responding to a call to live a lifestyle of humility and godliness. Lou Engle was deeply impacted by this profound event and began to mobilize a vision to raise up a corresponding youth movement of prayer and fasting that could bring forth a sweeping revival across America.

In 1999, a woman approached Lou and asked if he had ever considered putting young people on the National Mall like Promise Keepers did in 1997. Amazed at the question, Lou replied that two years prior he had proclaimed that the youth of America would gather together at the National Mall and it would be a sign from God that America was turning back to Him. The woman promptly wrote a check for $100,000 initiating what would eventually result in the TheCall DC. On September 2nd, 2000, an estimated 400,000 people collectively joined not to the sound of the latest names in Christendom, but to this phrase, “Almighty God summons you to a solemn assembly.” The presence of the Holy Spirit, with words of encouragement from our nation’s spiritual leaders, forever impacted multiple generations in attendance.

TheCall gatherings have been held across the nation in over seventeen different locations. Each gathering brought thousands of people hungry to seek the Lord. Specific regional and national issues such as racism, sexual immorality and abortion were targeted in corporate repentance as the body of Christ responded.  This movement has filled stadiums, arenas and massive open-air fields in cities across the nation. TheCall has extended beyond the borders of America to Australia, Africa, Germany, Norway, England, Korea, Brazil, France, Indonesia, Holland, Canada, Israel and the Philippines. The nations are responding to the summons of united fasting and prayer.

I saw this on the local news. Everyone was crying or looked in severe pain.

he leader of “The Call” is a man named Lou Engle, who recently proclaimed; “What happened to California will release a spirit that is more demonic than Islam, a spirit of lawlessness and anarchy. And a sexual insanity will be unleashed into the Earth.” in reference to same-sex marriage. This same man has been mired in controversy for his support of Uganda's current Anti-Homosexuality bill, in of which calls for life imprisonment and the death penalty for gays and lesbians in Uganda. Just this last May, Engle traveled to Uganda and organized a 'The Call' Rally at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, preaching against "homosexuality, witchcraft, and corruption."

It would appear, by the underwhelming turnout, that this city is a tolerant, loving place that does not discriminate against those those wish to use their right to choose, or those who express their homo-sexuality openly. GOOD!

My father, an ordained Methodist minister, once gave me a very valuable piece of advice. He said, "Beware of those who are sure and certain that God is on their side."

"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to
stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that
they may be seen by others."
Matthew 6:5

Making public shows of one's degree of religious faith veers all to easily into the sin of pride and should therefore be avoided.

sacjen: your father is a very wise man and gave you a very applicable Biblical quote.

Most of these leaders are charlatans and hypocrites as more and more of their sexual and personal financial scandals unfold. Unfortunately, the followers who are insecure and looking for simple answers to complex societal problems and inner conflicts are duped.
