The opening of a commuter/touring bike shop and cafe next to the downtown train station has stalled.

Brothers Tim and Mike Fallis originally had expected to open Depot Bikes & Cafe at the Railway Express Agency Building, 431 I St., Suite 102, in mid-May.

They planned to sell, rent and service bikes and offer ready-to-go food and beverages.

The opening was pushed back to July or August when they took over the lease for the space next door, after 5th and H Café closed Memorial Day Weekend.

No work appears to have been done on either retail space since then, and temporary signs announcing the coming of Depot Bikes have been taken down.

Tim Fallis could not be reached for comment.

I am guessing they are having trouble getting financing. Banks are doing less lending thanks to the higher reserve requirements from the federal government.

The worst banks are Citibank and Bank of America and Chase.. This was reported on the news. I would hope they would try a locally owned bank, THAT'S MY BANK!!!!

COME ON, one of you local banks, help these people.

Could be a blessing in disguise. Better to happen now, than after opening the place and having to go out of business in a couple of months. I think when/if the redevelopment thing finally starts to take shape, and more people start to amass in that area regularly, it would still be a great idea. You can't put the angel on top of the Christmas tree until you have the tree. Just made that up.

It would've been a nice angel to have around, P W. (good one, by the way)

I'm looking to start a bicycle-laden lifestyle, and having places like this would encourage others to do the same. Maybe they'll find the financing they need and give it another shot soon. I know I'm rooting for them.
