First off, here’s a little reminder about Smashing Pumpkins at the Crest Theatre on Monday; Tickets.com indicates that the event is sold out, but some day-ofs may still pop up. Best to try the Crest directly for any hope of catching Pumpkins 2.0.

Aside from that whopper of a local show, here’s the other fun on deck for your Labor Day weekend, after you pour beer on the coals and head out on the town!

Chalk it Up Festival – Now, we certainly don’t want you to step over those awesome sidewalk drawings that our local conglomerate of chalk-stick Rembrandts will be spinning on Labor Day weekend – but, from a music standpoint, this lineup just keeps getting more and more awesome, and this year’s 20th Anniversary edition is a blowout of local artists, led by out-of-towners the Silent Comedy. Hailing from San Diego, their set of speakeasy-themed indie rock and up-tempo pop has been a winner locally at DeVere’s St. Patty’s Day fest and a couple of sets at the Shady Lady (they’ll also be playing at Old Ironsides Sunday night along with the Kelps and Musical Charis). Also visiting is the mock-‘50s squeaky clean (?) fun of Smooot Valley High. Here is the lineup (in order from start-to-finish) for each of Chalk It Up’s three days (music runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, and the festival is free and all-ages):

Saturday: Waldorf Taiko Drummers, Stout Rebellion, Life in 24 Frames, Ricky Berger, Walking Spanish, Exquisite Corps, Sea Of Bees, Maren Parusel (San Diego), The Kelps, Pets.

Sunday: Exhale, The Shruggs, The Four Eyes, The Foxtails, Autumn Sky, Simpl3jack, Dog Party, Majesty, Silent Comedy (San Diego), Prieta.

Monday: The Trees, The Hungry, Bright Faces, The Generals, Goodness Gracious Me, Smooot Valley High, [Awards presentation], Signal The Red, Verbalistic, One Eyed Rhyno, I Scream On Sundae.

Helmet – Yep, Helmet actually has a new album out! This group was a mainstay in the MTV-led hard rock and alternative movement during the early ‘90s, but have been about as relevant as floppy disks in the mainstream circle ever since (not that that really matters in the grand scheme, does it?). Looks like the release date for "Seeing Eye Dog" is finally set for Tuesday, the day before they’ll be treating local hard rock fans to their dense, thick and syrupy sonic onslaught that draws comparisons to Fugazi, Tool and Clutch. 8 p.m. Wednesday. Harlow’s, 2708 J St. $15. 21+. www.harlows.com.

Fish Cat Fish - “Downtown looking for a bicycle shop/ I’m gonna panhandle the truth just to hear it drop.” Those lyrics are courtesy of FishCatFish’s demure vocalist Rachel Crisler; do these cats know Midtown or do they know Midtown? This quartet is still fairly new in Sacramento, but with their sultry, playful and soulful approach, they’re quickly becoming as much of a fixture on “The Grid” as fixed gears (their mid-tempo jazz inflected psych fusion is super smooth and in a constantly controlled spin), Sunday Funday (a few PBR’s perfectly complement their daytime buzz and kickin’ back vibes), and Downtown James Brown (they bring the funk, although they’re not nearly as high strung). It also appears folks in high places (that is, the fans) have taken notice; they’re nominated for a Sammie award in the Funk/R&B/Soul category. Huzzah! 9 p.m. Tuesday. Press Club, 21st and P St. $3. 21+.

The Snobs – Speaking of the Press Club, we haven’t seen the Snobbies do one of these “for the industry folks” shows in awhile, but expect a packed house to catch some mid-week sax seduction from front man Jason Boggs (certainly an “industry man” himself) and his band of throwback Stooges/Clash/Rocket From the Crypt-influenced miscreants. 9 p.m. Wednesday. Press Club, 21st and P St. $3. 21+.

Mark Your Calendars – Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band – A guy who looks like your neighborhood bowling alley attendant slinging punk rock and country riffs on a down-tuned Dobro, his wife slappin’ around the washboard, and his brother manning the drums/buckets? Woohoo! Oct. 1. Blue Lamp, 1400 Alhambra Blvd. www.myspace.com/bluelamp.

Dude, Helmet. Fired up for it. "Meantime" is one of the first CD's I ever bought (The first 4, bought all at once, nirvana, jesus jones, bbd, and boys to men. I was still figuring things out). I had almost forgotten about them until I saw the flier for this show at High Sierra. I thought i was tripping. Unsung is epic.
