We're not sure why, but the sign in the window says it all: Sargent's Coffee at Alhambra and L Street on the edge of the Grid, is no more.

Along with Old Soul, Naked Lounge and Temple, Sargent's served top of the line coffee for discriminating tastes, in an environment that was light and airy, with big leather couches and jazz on the stereo. I liked 'em because they used Ambience soy milk, which has no soy taste. Highly recommended.

The place wasn't open long - maybe two years, probably not that long. Other business in that spot, notably Red Square (?), had trouble. But Sargent's Elk Grove location didn't make it even that long before closing a few months ago.

Perhaps there IS a limit to how many cafes this town can support?

Meanwhile, we've got a message into the Sargents' email address, and we'll let you know what they say. Whether this was the economy or just a bad location or other reason, we don't know. Do you?

Apparently they still have their coffee roasting business. Le Petiti Paris on 19th, between L and Capitol Ave., buy their coffee beans from them. Check them out.

Downtown/Midtown-ers need to go to these places more. I often see neighbors of mine strolling into the nearby Starbucks, although Butch n Nellie's and Weatherstone (by Old Soul) are only a few blocks away. I imagine the starbucks down the street from Sargent's is still thriving (although I love the coffee cup they have on the building). I don't think location is the issue with this shop, Alhambra is a busy street...but who knows?

There needs to be some leadership on this. Everyone is being suckered into believing we are all part of a global economy. This makes everyone feel powerless and that we need Big solutions. Buy local. Support local artists, musicians, theaters, businesses.

Someone really needs to put a coffee shop in the retail space on r and 27th. There's no coffee shop near that part of Midtown. Just Saying.

A new Peet's Coffee just opened a couple of blocks from there. Coincidence? Same old story of the national brand moving in on the little guy.

+1 for a shop at R and 27th.

It is sad to see an independent coffee shop go away but it is also true that thriving small coffee shops offer something Starbucks or any large players can't offer. I have seen many successful coffee shops while located near Starbucks. That could be comfortable sitting space (chairs and sofas), location, menu and quality of coffee, drinks and food, inviting ambiance, music, events, etc. I feel the location was problem for Sargent's. While it was on busy Alhambra Street, facing a major road made the shop a little less inviting unless it aims to be a quick to-go type of shop. Being in a strip mall made it less charming while inside was quite nice and friendly. They had great coffee too. People might not just have felt that would be a place to meet friends or work over coffee. I hope they will open a shop again, perhaps on R and 27th! I would love more local and distinctive coffee shops in Sacramento!

Yeah, the new Naked Lounge is great, and there was nothing in that area. It was packed when i came in. Something like that would do great on 27th and R. I'm just beating that drum because I live two blocks away on T.
