Yes, you read that headline correctly.

The poster children for the alternative rock revolution of the early 1990's, and creators of one of the undeniably greatest double albums in history, "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," Smashing Pumpkins will perform in Downtown Sacramento at the Crest Theatre (1013 K St.) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 6.

Tickets for the general admission show are $40, and are available now at Tickets.com or Eventbrite.com.

The Pumpkins' show, announced yesterday by Abstract Entertainment, now becomes the cornerstone of a red-hot Sactown September concert calendar that also features such gems as Mason Jennings (9/9), Trombone Shorty & Orleans Ave (9/17), Tea Leaf Green (9/28), Muse (9/28), and the Devil Makes Three (9/30).

When Smashing Pumpkins made "their" comeback in 2007, behind the muddledly-reviewed comeback record "Zeitgeist," enigmatic front man Billy Corgan was beginning to flirt with Axl Rose territory, keeping the Smashing Pumpkins name alive with Jimmy Chamberlain as the only other original member in tow; James Iha and Melissa Auf der Maur had since moved on and did not take part in the band's second go-around.

By no means do we compare either "Zeitgeist" or their newest offering, the incrementally released digital album "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope" to the sludge of ego residue that was GN'R's "Chinese Democracy," but with Chamberlain's departure in 2009, Corgan now mans the Pumpkins franchise as the only remaining founding member (although he has always been it's main creative core).

Still, from mega hits like "Disarm" and "1979" to their cattle car of unheralded gems, Smashing Pumpkins still sports one the more intriguing, expertly crafted and at times emotionally harrowing catalogs in rock history, and Corgan remains slavisly devoted to meticulously caretaking it.
