All eyes were fixated on the skaters turned performers in “On the Y’s” Friday night crowd pleaser -- female derby mud wrestling. After paying a $10 cover, the crowd made their way onto the back patio to enjoy live DJ music by DJ Lois and Purple Hooter drink specials.
At seven-thirty an emcee, Jason Stout (aka 6-minutes of Steve), who was dressed in a Van Halen 1984 t-shirt, 80’s wig and bad comic lines began to hype the crowd while two zebra striped female referees (Karma Kuffs & Judy Jettison) set the stage: a six-foot square ring, poly-sheeted and filled with beige spa mud. The entire time the crowd chanted, “more mud, more mud.”
There were seven matches in all with the seventh being the title bearing one. In the end, Cha Cha Khan took the title and about 10-lbs of mud along with her – but lets not digress yet.
Earlier in the evening, the contestants entered wearing fantasy costumes (school girl, policywoman, football ref, Girl Scout, firefighter, etc.). One after another they entered the ring and went head-to-head with a counterpart during three 60-second rounds in which the women started on their knees and were encouraged and allowed to do anything except stand up, pull hair, or deliberately kick (all of which may have happened). After the match, the refs counted the number of pins per round and the winner was determined by audience response – for which they let their opinions be known.
As round after round completed, the anticipation grew for what would be the crowning moment – the next reigning Mud Queen (Previously held by Daddy’s Girl). It was the climax of the evening’s festivities and a moment not to be missed.
One by one the two finalists entered the mud – Veloci Ripher and Cha Cha Khan. The stage was set, the tension strong and the crowd wild. With 180 seconds of intense drama, mudslinging and body hurling Cha Cha Khan won a decisive victory in the mud and was crowned the 2010 Mud Queen.
This was the fourth year for the derby girls mud wrestling and according to Halee Daily (aka The 4Closer), the director of marketing for Sacred City Derby Girls, it will not be the last. Halee continued with, “It is an obvious crowd pleaser and something that allows the girls to let go without skates on.” Halee continued that thought with, "Mud Wrestling….the next sport besides Roller Derby that lets you fight a chick and not get put in jail.”
From this writers perspective, it accomplished three distinct goals: be a crowd pleaser, raise much needed money for the Sacrificers traveling team (almost $600 raised) and allow the girls to have fun off the track.
Halee Daily would also like to remind everyone that on August 21st there will be a double header bout featuring both the Sacrificers and the Disciples. The Event will be held at Roller King in Roseville and tickets are only $12 in advance and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com.
Additionally, Sacred will be hosting the 2010 western regionals at Memorial Auditorium Oct. 1-3. This event will bring together 10 nationally ranked teams from across the west and promises a lot of derby fun. The regional’s website is www.rollinontheriver.net
