Political ads may be famous for mudslinging, but if you want to see the real deal, drop by On The Y on Aug. 13 to watch the Sacred City Derby Girls duke it out in the mud pit.
The girls will be mud wrestling to raise money to pay for one of the group’s two roller derby teams – The Sacrificers – to travel for the 2011 season. The tournament at the bar, located at 670 Fulton Blvd., is open to the 21-and-over crowd
“We will have drink specials, and there will be a live DJ after the tournament,” said Halee Daily, director of marketing for the Sacred City Derby Girls.
“Basically, we pick eight of our skaters (for the tournament), and we have last year’s Mud Queen seeing if she can keep her title,” Daily said. “It gets kind of crazy.”
The wrestling is expected to last about an hour, Daily said.
In years past, Daily said the event has mostly been attended by fans, other derby teams and bar patrons who happened to be there at the right time, but this year, the mud wrestling is being promoted more widely, and anyone is welcome.
Some of the moves in the mud are choreographed, but most of the match will not have any prior planning.
“Usually everyone who is part of it is dressed up,” Daily said.
Originally, planners wanted to use red Jell-O so the girls could wrestle in “blood” to coincide with Friday the 13th, but in the end, the special Jell-O needed for wrestling – because regular Jell-O is too sticky – would have cost about $500, Daily said.
The Sacrificers are currently ranked 10th among the 25 active teams on the west coast, and there are 68 teams nationwide for the girls to compete against in their 2011 season.
The roughly 100 Sacred City Derby Girls are all 21 or older, though some leagues are open to women 18 and older, Daily said.
“This would just be a great way to come out and hang out with the derby girls and have a great time as well as purchase tickets to our Aug. 21 season finale at Roller King in Roseville,” Daily said.
During the Aug. 21 event, there will be two bouts – one featuring The Sacrificers, and the other featuring the Sacred City Derby Girls’ home team, The Disciples.
About 45 skaters regularly rotate through the home team’s 20-slot roster, while the traveling team is the all-star team, and tryouts for the 20 spots on it are held every three months.
Additionally, Sacred will be hosting the 2010 western regionals at Memorial Auditorium Oct. 1-3.
“Derby is just spreading so fast,” Daily said.
Entrance to the Aug. 13 mud wrestling event is $10, and the doors open at 7 p.m.
