Don't have time to trudge down to City Hall to complain about potholes not being filled or street lights that are out? Have something to say about proposed cutbacks in the fire department? Want to learn more about how the city is going to balance the budget?

Next week, I'm going to bring City Hall to you.

On Thursday, February 19th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Evelyn Moore Community Center (1402 Dickson Street, near the Executive Airport), I will be holding my first community office hours. No appointment is necessary; simply come on down and talk face-to-face with me and members of my team.

This is another effort to make Sacramento's city government more accessible and accountable to you. Since taking office just a few weeks ago, I've held a Town Hall meeting in the Pocket, and have another one scheduled later this month in another neighborhood. Every week, I appear on News10 (usually Wednesdays at 5 p.m.) for an "online chat" moderated by a News10 reporter, and answer questions that same day at 3 p.m. on KFBK. In addition to my columns here, I also write monthly for the INSIDE publications, as well as the Land Park News, Pocket News, and the Sacramento Observer. It's my way of letting you know what we're up to at City Hall.

Of course, you can always email me directly: mayor@cityofsacramento.org. Every email gets a response (though sometimes it takes awhile because of high traffic).

But the office hours next week are a good opportunity to share what's on your mind. Hope to see you there.

Mayor Johnson,

Are you and your volunteers conducting the City's business exclusively on cityofsacramento.org email addresses?

A revision of the city's disclosure policies will be brought up at the City Council meeting next Tuesday. I urge you to attend and share your views.

I'll take that as a "No".

Are you referring to item #2 on the Consent Calendar: 2009 Updated Conflict of Interest Code?

How is the third floor of City Hall looking since you moved in? That used to be Development Services' public counter--will it again be a public counter where citizens can walk in and meet the Mayor's staff?

You are welcome to drop by anytime. The unused section of the third floor has been turned into open office space with a public counter. It looks like a newsroom -- wide open. Please stop by and say hi.

Mr. Mayor,

You may have noticed that every major and minor Arts organization in the City is suffering from the economic downturn. Is this something you are planning on helping with at this time? Does the City rank Arts Stability high on it's list of priorities?

Absolutely. I've been willing to lend a hand personally to do what I can to help with fundraisers, events, etc. If there's anything specific I can do to help, let me know. As you probably know, I'm a big fan of the 40 Acres Gallery in Oak Park.

Mr. Mayor,

Are you going to instruct the City Manager (who answers to you and the Council) to allow the Development Services department to be audited by the current city auditor (who also answers to you and the Council)?

As you know, I can't "instruct" the City Manager to do this without a majority vote on the Council. Earlier this year, I suggested an INDEPENDENT audit of city government (and it would have resulted in no net costs to the city), but that was rejected.

So why not go up to the 5th floor and talk to the other members of the Council about it? I can't imagine it being a particularly hard sell, considering that several council members have expressed concerns about Kerridge's refusal to have Development Services audited. You already have an auditor who is contracted from outside the city government. Use the auditor you have, and go talk to the other members of the Council as much as you talk to us!
