All the world’s a stage at the Sacramento Theatre Company’s 2010 summer camp.

STC is currently hosting its eighth annual program for children in first through ninth grades. From improvisation to audition techniques, scene study to puppetry, students are able to learn about theater life from all angles.

Jeremy Gray first attended the camp in 2005.

“I was a nervous, prepubescent boy,” Gray said, explaining his initial apprehension with the stage. “But the camp really introduces you to theater and focuses on stage presence.”

Now Gray is a dedicated actor in STC’s Young Professionals Conservatory, a rigorous theater training program for middle and high school students. Gray is also an intern for the camp as a junior counselor, overseeing all other interns.

“The most important part of this camp is that it helps young actors become comfortable on stage,” Gray added.

Every day, all campers warm-up in a group yoga session, before breaking off into smaller groups. Classes continue throughout the day with trained professionals leading diverse classes. Lessons focus on topics such as mask making, character development, set design and theater history.

The camp runs for four weeks but is split into two two-week sessions. Within the sessions, the participants are divided into groups based on age and interest. As the young actors study and practice, they also prepare for a grand finale showcase for family and friends on their last day. The final show includes an array of performances including singing, dancing and original plays written by the kids.

“We want our kids to leave with a good understanding of what it takes to succeed in theater,” said Camp Director Lynn Baker. “But we also want to help them become better public speakers and improve their self confidence. Acting really helps connect the body with the mind.”

Although the first session is halfway finished, there is still space available for those interested in participating in the second session from July 26 through Aug. 6. Classes run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with early and after childcare available. For more information, call Lynn at 446-7501, extension 116, or e-mail STCensemble@yahoo.com.

STC is also preparing its 2010-2011 season, entitled, “A Return to the Classics.” The company will open on Oct. 6 with the company’s own rendition of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” For more information on their upcoming season, visit sactheatre.org.
