After over 30 years in the local Fire Service, I am hanging up my helmet!  It has been a very long career, and one that I will surely miss. I am more than fortunate enough to retire and still have my health! For the last 4 years I have been the Sacramento Fire Department’s “Public Information Officer”. I left the fire house back in 2006 for a lot of reasons, but the main reason is that being a Firefighter takes its toll and I needed a change.

I considered doing other “desk jobs” in the fire department, but none of them appealed to me as much as being the PIO. People that know me know that I have a passion for talking! And I love to talk about things that are near and dear to me. That is why this was such a perfect fit for me. I love the Sacramento Fire Department. I love the people who work here and they are what I am most proud of.

I am not totally leaving the Fire Service. I have accepted a position with the Firefighters Burn Institute. This local charity is the organization that runs the Kids Summer Burn Camp in Lake Tahoe and works closely with the Shriners and UC Davis Hospitals and their burn units. I am so privileged to have been chosen to be their new Executive Director and I will work hard to make the Burn Institute a local charity that benefits everyone in our region.

You will hear from me on occasion writing stories for the Burn Institute in the Sacramento Press. The Sacramento Press has been an awesome way for me to get out the message of the Sacramento Fire Department. Everyone who I have had contact with at the Sacramento Press has always been helpful to me and I really appreciate everything. Your “on line paper” has become a success and I believe your future looks very bright.

Thanks again,

Captain Jim Doucette
Sacramento Fire Department

You contributions have been stellar. It's sad to see you leave, but good to hear you've landed at another wonderful job. I look forward to your future posts as much as I have enjoyed your past ones.
