Folsom’s Cattle Drive was a successful event. Even the cattle almost had success running away from the drive. They were lassoed and brought back to join the pre-established route after a brief period of time. Before the actual Cattle Drive started the running of the “Bullipedes” took place. The Bullipedes (ala centipede) are made up of 5 members running a one mile course and ending on Sutter Street. Prizes are awarded at the end of the Bullipede run.

This family affair also included a parade that followed the Bullipedes. After the parade the Cattle Drive begins to make its from Folsom’s Lions City Park and ends at the end of Sutter Street by the light rail station. This is one of the last active cattle drives in Northern California. As previously noted the Bullipedes start the festivities and after a brief intermission floats, horses, cowboys (and cowgirls) as well as dignitaries follow the same route. Again, after a brief intermission, the cattle start making their way to Sutter Street.

All this is in preparation for the Folsom Pro Rodeo which starts on July 2nd and continues until the 4th. The Dan Russell Rodeo Arena has been the home of the rodeo and it will open its gates at 6 p.m. on the July 2 and concludes with a nightly laser light and fireworks show.

At the end of the Cattle Drive Sutter Street hosted various activities for the whole family. The fun carried on, for adults, at the many restaurants and bars where musical entertainment continued for the evening. This rodeo celebrates its golden anniversary this year. For the past 50 years the Lions City Park has also been the host site for the rodeo. If you have not made it to the Folsom’s Pro Rodeo it continues through July 4th.
