Johnson may ask council to vote again on strong mayor

The Sacramento City Council’s 7-2 vote last week against a strong mayor form of city government is not stopping Mayor Kevin Johnson from pursuing another council vote on the issue.

Johnson’s comments to reporters at a Tuesday press conference indicate that he may ask council members to vote again on the issue after they return from their two-week summer recess in mid-July.

The City Council voted last week to prevent City Attorney Eileen Teichert from drafting official language for Johnson’s latest strong mayor proposal. Johnson and Councilman Robbie Waters voted in favor of writing up the proposal, while the other seven council members rejected it.

As it stands, the proposal will not be placed before voters on the November ballot.

Johnson plans to continue to lobby council members on the issue.

“It’s a long shot, but there’s still a little time,” Johnson said.

He said he would talk more in the coming days about the timeframe he is considering.

“We’re going to still have conversations with council members (and) encourage people to at least stay open-minded on it," Johnson said.

Councilman Steve Cohn said Tuesday that Johnson has not talked to him about a July vote. Johnson’s comments to the press will not help him convince his colleagues to vote in favor of the proposal, Cohn said. If he needs more votes from council members, he should talk to council members.

“He better quit talking about it in the press, and talk with the three council members,” Cohn said.

Cohn noted that Johnson made harsh remarks to council members at last week’s City Council meeting.

The City Council will hold its next meeting July 13.

Every word that KJ made to Steve Cohn and the other district councilmembers was deserved. I hope KJ will keep the pressure on each and everyone of them!

you may think "deserved" where others see Bully Boss Mayor, his own worst enemy. HE and his inappropriate, unprofessional behavior are current examples of why Sacramento previously changed the charter: to prevent too much power in the hands of unscrupulous, abusive individuals.

Why does anyone think these folks will grow a backbone over their (I assume) paid vacation? These folks whine about the fact that the public has not had input. The last time I looked having a spirited campaign and a vote is how the public has input in policy. So what are these council members afraid of..... that the public will get a chance to speak??

yes people are afraid of the public getting to speak if they are all as uninformed about the process as you seem to be

Rhys02- Why would the council be afraid the public would get a chance to speak when many members of the public have spoken to their councilmember against it? The question is what is Johnson afraid of? Why can't he wait? Surely he has other issues to address other than 30 more officers on the streets rounding people up like cattle to head off to prison mills instead of spending time looking for resources, opportunity, employment ......

KJ must have some damn good photos of council members in compromising positions! Either that or he's having Braziel plant crack on Cohn, Fong and Hammond and then working out a "deal." How else could the good mayor turn the tables? SacPress should check on how much seats will be going for on July 13. Should be one hell of a show!

I agree, it should be one heck of a show and I hope I can attend that day I wouldn't want to miss it for the world, but unfortunately or fortunately I just got a job and unsure of my hours but I will email my councilmember my concerns if I can't attend. Yogi, is still looking for a picnic basket and is becoming a stalker when it comes to the SMI.

you are talking in slogans and not actually addressing the comment. this mayor is acting out the definition of insanity while not doing his current job, while insisting he needs more unilateral power to do his job. "The people" of Sacramento decided 80 years ago to NOT allow delusional egomaniacs to have excessive power over the process and changed the charter to PREVENT an abusive Boss Mayor, on behalf of "the people" of today who get their opinions from Faux News and repeat slogans without any idea what they mean or what the consequences of their simplistic notions might be.

Rich E, it seems you also leave out the fact that at least the councilmember’s are listening to some and I believe many of their constituents whereas KJ appears to not hear anyone but the voice in his own head or the special interest surrounding his SMI. Your comment is propaganda.

Rich? It's actually 9 people. Of these 9 people 7 voted against SMI. This is called representative democracy. Remember civics class? It's how it works.

can't wait to see another marathon council meeting in which the mayor berates his colleagues and further degrades his leadership rather than actually make a case for a Strong Mayor system - maybe because there is no case to be made...

it is only good business practice that if you are unhappy with anyone that you take that person aside and discuss why you are unhappy with their actions and work out ones displeasure to a friendly end hopefully. You do not evaluate and invalidate someone in public in front of others and especially our mayor berating city council members at a public forum such as council meetings. The berating of other members of the council by the mayor only degrades further the leadership of this mayor and lowers the credibility of this city council from my viewpoint

TAB well said, and I agree.

It appears Johnson runs to the media like a wounded child running to mommy after they're injured or after someone takes their candy away from them.

If he were a leader he would have went to his colleagues--the council-- NOT his team of advisors and strategists running to the media-- without first going to the folks he attacked at the last council meeting--the same folks who did NOT attack him when they discussed their reasons for voting NO.

I absolutely agree with what you wrote, " You do not evaluate and invalidate someone in public in front of others and especially our mayor berating city council members at a public forum such as council meetings. The berating of other members of the council by the mayor only degrades further the leadership of this mayor and lowers the credibility of this city council from my viewpoint"- Again, well said.

He can't let it go. He is an adolescent politician - who behaves like a child-- and will keep trying and trying until he gets mommy (the media, community, council) to finally say "okay, okay, shut up already" It is always concerning when a child repeatedly asks over and over for the same thing until he can get the parent to change their mind.

Well the parents in this case-- the community reaching out to their council members- will stand firm against this spoiled child saying NO means NO; but heck, I guess I shouldn’t expect our Mayor to grasp the concept of NO means NO and see consequences- cause and effect-- from continuing the behavior after all he HAS YET to be held accountable for ANY of his other bad behavior. So the spoiled kid just keeps asking in hopes to either 1) catch folks off guard 2) get folks to give in to his tantrums and / or whinny behavior.

Unbelievable absolutely unbelievable

isn't there any other pressing business before the mayor and the city council? I don't think the Strong Mayor initiative is at the top of the list for the vast majority of Sacramentans. This initiative is not something we are clamouring for. No one I personally know sees it as either necessary or critical at this particular time. Can our elected representatives PLEASE address the many other crucial issues at hand and put this aside for the next year at least! ENOUGH all ready!!!
