The Sacramento City Council’s 7-2 vote last week against a strong mayor form of city government is not stopping Mayor Kevin Johnson from pursuing another council vote on the issue.
Johnson’s comments to reporters at a Tuesday press conference indicate that he may ask council members to vote again on the issue after they return from their two-week summer recess in mid-July.
The City Council voted last week to prevent City Attorney Eileen Teichert from drafting official language for Johnson’s latest strong mayor proposal. Johnson and Councilman Robbie Waters voted in favor of writing up the proposal, while the other seven council members rejected it.
As it stands, the proposal will not be placed before voters on the November ballot.
Johnson plans to continue to lobby council members on the issue.
“It’s a long shot, but there’s still a little time,” Johnson said.
He said he would talk more in the coming days about the timeframe he is considering.
“We’re going to still have conversations with council members (and) encourage people to at least stay open-minded on it," Johnson said.
Councilman Steve Cohn said Tuesday that Johnson has not talked to him about a July vote. Johnson’s comments to the press will not help him convince his colleagues to vote in favor of the proposal, Cohn said. If he needs more votes from council members, he should talk to council members.
“He better quit talking about it in the press, and talk with the three council members,” Cohn said.
Cohn noted that Johnson made harsh remarks to council members at last week’s City Council meeting.
The City Council will hold its next meeting July 13.

Rich? It's actually 9 people. Of these 9 people 7 voted against SMI. This is called representative democracy. Remember civics class? It's how it works.

It appears Johnson runs to the media like a wounded child running to mommy after they're injured or after someone takes their candy away from them.
If he were a leader he would have went to his colleagues--the council-- NOT his team of advisors and strategists running to the media-- without first going to the folks he attacked at the last council meeting--the same folks who did NOT attack him when they discussed their reasons for voting NO.
I absolutely agree with what you wrote, " You do not evaluate and invalidate someone in public in front of others and especially our mayor berating city council members at a public forum such as council meetings. The berating of other members of the council by the mayor only degrades further the leadership of this mayor and lowers the credibility of this city council from my viewpoint"- Again, well said.
Well the parents in this case-- the community reaching out to their council members- will stand firm against this spoiled child saying NO means NO; but heck, I guess I shouldn’t expect our Mayor to grasp the concept of NO means NO and see consequences- cause and effect-- from continuing the behavior after all he HAS YET to be held accountable for ANY of his other bad behavior. So the spoiled kid just keeps asking in hopes to either 1) catch folks off guard 2) get folks to give in to his tantrums and / or whinny behavior.
Unbelievable absolutely unbelievable
