The year was 1985, the first version of Windows was released, “We are the World” was a pop sensation, the average home cost was $89,330, a gallon of gas cost $1.09, and legwarmers and stonewash jeans were all the rage. And, in Sacramento, a young man named Dale Carlsen opened the first Sleep Train Mattress Center, now the number one bedding specialist on the west coast and number four nationwide.

Beginning his career as a salesperson for local mattress manufacturer Lady Americana, Carlsen’s experience inspired him to forego a traditional job path to pursue entrepreneurship and found Sleep Train, the top locally-owned retailer of quality sleep products that emphasizes superior customer service, the lowest price – guaranteed, and a sustained commitment to its community. Sleep Train’s first store was located on Folsom Boulevard in Sacramento, and Carlsen added a second store in Citrus Heights within eight months.

In December 2002, Sleep Train, Inc. acquired Mattress Discounters and in August 2006 added the Northwest’s largest bedding specialist, Sleep Country USA, becoming the biggest bedding specialist on the west coast with more than 229 stores, located from Bellingham, Washington to San Diego, California. Starting with just two mattress lines, Sleep Train has grown to carry the industry’s top brands, including Simmons, Sealy, Beautyrest, Posturepedic, Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster, and The Vera Wang Organic Collection by Serta.

“The success of our company is due to the great people I am blessed to work with each day,” said Sleep Train founder and CEO Dale Carlsen. “My father’s advice, when I started, was to surround myself with great people, treat them right and make everyone successful. We now have over 1,100 employees who are dedicated and skilled at providing the best customer experience possible. We have also surrounded ourselves with great manufacturers, media partners and personalities.”

Sleep Train is celebrating 25 years in business with luau-themed picnics for employees, prominence of its 25-years during its annual golf charity event for Foster Kids and a special thank you anniversary event in its stores for customers, which will offer discounts of up to 40% off Posturepedic and Beautyrest products, $200 off Tempurpedic mattresses, and 36 months of interest-free financing, starting June 7th, 2010 through July 5th 2010. In addition, the company prepares to launch a new Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), providing notable ownership to its employees and making Sleep Train an employee-owned enterprise.

Today, Sleep Train is known for its superior customer service and team of knowledgeable sales individuals, as well as its continued commitment to the community with the Sleep Train Foster Kids program. Sleep Train locations can be found at www.sleeptrain.com or by calling 1-800-378-BEDS (2337).

This should be considered advertising due to the prices and discounts listed. Sell them an online ad!

Kati, I understand how it might bother you to see a possible plug for a company. However, lets consider that this is a home grown company that gives so much back to the community. How could we not be happy for the success of a company who supports Foster Kids? Come on! Lets not be petty and small! Lets all congratulate Sleep Train! Glad you are doing well and sharing your good fortune with our community!

I agree with Kati. The issue here is not whether to be "happy" for the company. It is that SacPress readers are looking for the local news angle and don't appreciate the self-serving press releases that companies post here, looking for free advertising. This article, even with the disclosure, strikes me as falling more on the "free advertising" side than on the "news" side. It could have been done differently.

That being said, SP seems to not be consistent in enforcing their own policies. Today was a perfect example, with the guy plugging his old Sac shootin' range--that article made front page news. It baffles and frustrates me sometimes.

I think that you have missed the obvious daily promoting of political parties and issues that go on each day. Each and every time we bring up a political issue, itbwill more often than not, result in a promotion for one or more candidate. Is it a "free ad" for the Bee removal guys? Is it a plug for Big Brothers, Salvation Army, Eric Volz's book? What about the old fashioned shooting gallery? The list is endless! Did you complain about these or when there was so much written about the Squeeze Inn? Again, my point is that this company has become big without forgetting where it began. They are kind enough to share their good fortune with the community. Give them a break! Or at least treat them in the same manner as you would any of the other companies who also had free advertising.

Thanks for the feedback Kati. Since the author is not directly employed by Sleep Train we left the story up. However, it does come close to a straight advertisement, which we don't allow so to be completely transparent to readers we have included a disclosure line and asked that she include this in her profile also.

hmmm. Many of the posted articles in the Sac Press include the promotion of a business or event and services with prices, etc.

We do our best to ask for disclosures of affiliations in all profiles that should have them and at times include notes at the bottom of the article. If you notice something that we missed please flag the item with the "spam" flag and we will look into it. Thanks, thsas!

It's nice to see a success story on a local business these days - and one that has been very supportive of foster kids and charitable causes in our community.

This is an ad pure and simple, others trying to dress up the fact are not engaging in the truth. Sleeptrain and Mattress Discounters are owned by the same person. Do the Sleeptrain sales staff "disclose" this fact when they shuffle customers between the stores? This creates the illusion of good salesmanship by allowing customers to cross shop all the while gobbling up all the loot for one man...shameful misuse of public trust... period. "Disclosures"....that's funny

Just as no one who shops at Banana Republic is told that they are the Gap, and Black and Decker will not tell you on the box they build DeWalt, and the list goes on forever ofc ompanies who own multiple brands.! You might be new to shopping, so wise up.
Public trust isses? You are just tossing words together.

justasacguy must be a carpenter. They don't tell you that they are the same company. Yes, it's true that they do good things for charity but charity begins at home. Sleep Train's owner has been taking money from us employees for years. They also require all of us to vote for the company on any of the newspaper "Best of" surveys. They put forth a good face to the public but when it comes to those who work for the company it's more like two faced. It's no wonder why there is such a turnover of employees. Once the koolaid has worn off and we find out how we've been taken advantage of for so long, we're seeking new employment. Integrity within this company is a joke.
