I really like the Sacramento Press.  It gives an open forum to the public which otherwise would be unlikely to find an audience.  It's free and anyone can say just about anything, and that's good.  I wouldn't ask to have the rules changed.

But as to continuing to participate, my reasons for dropping out are simply that, in my mind, a person writes a bit of news or an opinion and the public is welcome to comment on it.  That's good too.

I do however take umbrage at readers who, instead of discussing the comments, rebutting them or agreeing with them, instead turn their attention from the comments to the writer with an aggressive, personal, untruthful, mistaken and just plain rude comments that do nothing to address the commentary.

Such outright lies against anyone could leave the accuser open to legal action.  I'd think about that before I shoot my mouth off with accusations that came my way as  "hearsay evidence".

I won't mention names.  You know who you are, even if you can't get your facts straight.

So rather than continue to generate quality contributions, you're going to stop contributing all together? I appreciate your contributions, but I wonder if stepping away amounts to an assumptive victory for those who comment in such negative and objectionable fashion. Consider the possibility that doing so only perpetuates the problem.

If you have lived long enough to have great grand kids, you shouldn't take anything so personaly.

I've never read any of your articles, nor do I know what comments or people you are referring to, but I'd encourage you to hang in there. Don't let the ad hominemers get you down. It goes with the territory of having an opinion.

If I wanted subject myself to lies, false accusations and bilious personal attacks, I'd become a politician.

Considering the tone of the articles you've posted, you may want to simply take a look in the mirror. I'm not saying you should stop contributing to SP, but the tone of your writing and your use of deliberately inflammatory/accusatory language are being reflected back to you in the comments on your opinion pieces. Just a thought.

The first time I had a nasty comment it upset me. But over time, I just learned to take them with a grain of salt. Any online newspaper will have lots of comments, both supportive and scathing. It just comes with the territory of being a journalist. I encourage you to continue to write if you have something the community should hear.

II agree with many comments. Heck, people are also looking for transparency in more than politicians but in those who have / seek a voice. Continue to write what's on your mind. We do have to look at the man in the mirror. We get back what we put out. Don't let anyone influence or prevent you from having a voice. In the words of Gandhi: "First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

The good outweighs and overshadows the bad. Personal attacks aren’t cool but what some may see as an attack another may not..... I think Sac Press draws the line at a good point and removes comments that are attacking. But if you want your voice heard; the strong survive cause they take it with a grain of salt knowing it comes with the territory. For goodness sake, never let people see you sweat; you disarm yourself and arm others with how to silence your voice. I hope you keep writing/ commenting

In the light of day, just step back, relax and rethink your position. Your pieces are thoughtful and genuine. Breath, and good luck!

CM Albrecht: Thank you for the article and the discussion that has come from it; which is another reason you shouldn't stop writing. Heck, sometimes it's not about us but about what can come / what it brings....

Thoughtful, objective commentary is always better than emotionally charged, aggressive comments.

This is a very old tactic that has been used for centuries. The commenter attacks the messenger, instead of debating the merits of a certain position. This is a tool that is cleverly used in the media all the time. For example, people can be labeled "racist" if they criticize President Obama. People will choose to tune-out the message because the messenger has now been labeled "undesirable"; and no one wants to get advice from someone like that. right?

The level of skill wielded by the media is far greater than the skill-set of most internet comment writers. When they choose to attack the messenger, their warrant-less name calling only makes them look like buffoons.

SacPress is open to addressing these issues. Anyone with constructive solutions to minimize the bullies, phonies and operatives trying to dominate this unique local venue for uncensored news/comments?

This is a secondary issue, but I think that the anonymous thumb down is a worthless tool. If you want to offer criticism for someones article, you should have to be willing to take responsibility for said criticism. Own it, or keep it to yourself. The writers are putting themselves out there, the commenters should be expected to do the same.
