It is a gorgeous day in Sacramento as I stroll through the crowd of revelers celebrating ice cream shop Gunther’s 70th anniversary. Mayor Kevin Johnson stops to say hello to me, and then I am stopped by a handsome, well-dressed young man in jeans and a button-down dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He's wearing trendy aviator sunglasses and is surrounded by a large group of young people in Marcel 2010 T-shirts. “Are you Erin," he asks. "I’m Marcel and I believe we have an interview.”

Marcel Weiland is not the typical politician -- he's young and never has been elected to a position. He's quick to remind me that he will turn 20 in November, but seems older. While many of his friends are playing video games, going to parties and studying for finals, he is vying for a seat in California’s State Senate.

He is endorsed by the California Republican Assembly for District 6, the seat currently held by Sen. Darell Steinberg. Weiland said the issues he's focusing on range from bringing business back to California to what may be today's most heated topic, immigration. He said voters clearly are dissatisfied with politics as usual, and he wants to heed that message and do something about it. He said his age should not distract voters but be seen as providing a "fresh perspective."

Weiland said he has no desire to become a career politician and will continue his education. He's studying now for finals at American River College and said he wants to receive a bachelor's degree in public policy. Asked why he was embarking on this journey, Weiland said he wants to make a difference and get California back on top of its game.

Authors sidenote:
Marcel Weiland should be a powerful testament to everyone that regardless of age, experience, or education, anyone can make a difference and I think we can all agree that California could use a strong dose of eagerness and gumption these days! Best of luck Mr. Weiland...

Spent years of his to life to become Eagle Scout - something that requires great community service and an understanding of community, nation, and world government. To name just a few requirements.

You're best thinking leads to nothing more than that single question?

You can contact Marcel Weiland at weiland4senate@gmail.com to ask those question. I am certain he would be happy to oblige.

I don't want to knock someone for throwing their hat in the ring at such a young age; however, I couldn't vote for someone with so little life experience, so little education, and zero experience with public policy. The question I ask is "how well will that person represent our community" when the going gets tough. And, honestly, I think folks need to show they've cut their teeth on public service--on a board, commission, or city council--before they go play with the big dogs.

I see what you're saying. I would go one step further and say I don't think anyone should consider running for any elected public service position unless they have successfully run a private business for 5 years. So many people in these offices have no concept what it takes to run a successful business and rather than helping them, they encumber them.
However, reality is, people enter without experience at all levels of politics; I don't think Marcel Weiland should worry about any lack of public service. He'll land on his feet and do just fine.

I have heard Marcel speak publicly. While he is gifted in the speech department, he says nothing substantive. Of course, this may be because of the youth and inexperience. Not a personal attack, just a truthful observation. FWIW, I really like the kid.

I say to Marcel that I admire you for having the "grapefruits" to take on a seasoned politician like Darrell Steinberg when your own party (Sac GOP) didn't have the cahones to field a candidate. Work hard, make a name for yourself, and finish school. If you do these things you will have a bright future in politics or whatever you decide to do.

Best of luck, Marcel.

Nothing substantive? Where are you getting this? There's nothing to support this claim. When Marcel speaks, he always has the most recent facts on California's economic problems on the top of his head. He also shows in his speaking why this problem can be linked back to California legislature, and specifically the senate leader. If you hold to the opinion that Marcel doesn't say anything substantive, we must be listening to different candidates.

However, I agree with you that Marcel has real guts. That's what it takes to get this senate seat, and that's what Marcel has. It's high time California introduced some leaders into it's legislature that aren't seasoned politicians!

This reminds me of the 'Ladies Against Women' support ads endorsing Dan Quayle... 'Vote Cute -- Vote Quayle!"

"Hi -- I stand for nothing, but I'm endorsed by some GOP thing or whatever... Vote for Me!"

All hat -- no cattle....

Since I have heard Marcel speak on numerous occasions, I am qualified to say he is not only a good speaker, he is also quite up on public policy. He has studied numerous public policy issues and is far ahead of many of the average people you meet every day, when it comes to being knowledgeable and informed. Better check him out thoroughly before you put down his youth and inexperience. I give him an A + for courage and passion for his future and the future of his generation. They will, after all, end up paying for the mistakes of many an "experienced " career politician.
