Oak Park's Farmers' Market will continue throughout the summer every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 34th and Broadway across from Old Soul Coffeehouse .

During yesterday's inaugural market there was aribbon cutting ceremony and live music as well as all the wonderful fresh produce of the season.

The residents of the Oak Park community have been working for years to bring a farmers' market to this, at times, troubled neighborhood.

The Oak Park Farmers' Market is a project of NeighborWorks Sacramento, in partnership with community residents, community garden advocates, backyard growers, and fresh produce sellers.

Together they have loosely formed the Oak Park Food Collaborative.

In addition to providing the Oak Park Community with weekly local access to fresh fruit and vegetables, the group intends to make Oak Park the sustainable food center of the Sacramento Region.

Here are some scenes:

Congratulations to all who brought us the first Oak Park Farmer's Market! My husband and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Every booth--both food and information-- had something special, not to mention the great entertainment. I hope even more food booths will follow. See you next Saturday!

I sauteed those snow peas in a little olive oil with onion, garlic, tomato and lemon juice. Those strawberries went with down with some Upper Crust bread, truffle goat cheese and Sauvignon Blanc.

I enjoyed talking to the farmers who brought heirloom tomato plants - there's still time to plant- local strawberries -grown here in sacramento!, fresh sweet peas, and crisp lettuce. All produce is fresh, I mean local FRESH. I also indulged in Old Soul coffee - freshly brewed- while listening to free entertainment from local band Boulevard Park. Bring an umbrella and some water, shade is needed. Family friendly.
