"Sacramento became an epicenter for a new millennium."

Ten years ago, Randy Neal and Victor Styrsky didn’t know each other. What they did know, however, was that Christianity should reject part of its past and move in a new direction. Neal had founded Bridges Ministry and was reaching out to Native Americans, Jews, and other ethnic communities. Pastor Styrsky had co-founded a church that rapidly grew to 325 members.

Most dear to these religious leaders, however, were Jews — the apple of God's eye, the very people who gave Christians their savior. Accordingly, what most tormented these men was the long, sad record of Jewish persecution. Finally, what most galled them was that 2,000 years of this persecution was committed under the banner of their Christ, a Jew himself.

Neal and Styrsky became consumed by a desire to change history, to inaugurate a new era of Christian-Jewish relations that rejected the Inquisition, the Crusades, the pogroms and the Holocaust, and which replaced them with unconditional love.

To them, loving Jews is the right thing to do, because without Judaism there would be no Christianity. Of equal importance to them is that loving Jews is a biblical mandate. When speaking of the Jewish nation, Genesis 12:3 quotes God as saying, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.”

When the two men met, they clicked immediately. To be sure, other key figures were part of that process: Sacramento Pastor Troy Hinkle, the patriarch of Christian activism for Jews in the city; and Ruth Brandt, a colorful member of Sacramento’s Jewish community. Hinkle's son, Timothy, since has inherited his father's mantle.

The result of these activists coming together is that Sacramento became an epicenter for a new millennium.

And things were changing elsewhere.

Pastor John Hagee’s Texas megachurch, with 19,000 members, held annual Nights to Honor Israel. In 2006, Hagee, whose theologically based love for Jews matched that of Neal and Styrsky, formed a national organization to spread Nights to Honor Israel around the country and to lobby the U.S. government to support Israel. He called it Christians United for Israel (CUFI).

Some would say it was fate, some would say it was a remarkable coincidence. These men, however, are certain that it was God’s hand that brought Hagee into contact with the Sacramento epicenter. Neal became CUFI’s West Coast director, while Styrsky became East Coast director.

Sacramento’s next Night to Honor Israel will be on May 23 at 7 p.m. in the Radisson Hotel.

Three previous Nights in Sacramento raised almost $200,000 for projects in Israel to help refugees and other immigrants, along with victims of terrorism and disadvantaged children. Other Nights throughout the country have raised more than $40 million for similar projects in Israel.

The Nights, full of live music and stirring speakers, can be transformational for Christians and Jews. Two Holocaust survivors were so overwhelmed by the healing nature of the evening that each said, “I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming.”

Hundreds of thousands of Christians and Jews are flocking to CUFI. Christians in African-American, Hispanic and Asian churches are joining the group, as are evangelicals, Catholics and Christians in underground churches in China and the Middle East. Jews, including rabbis and members of Conservative, Hasidic and Reform synagogues, also have been drawn to the movement.

For more information on the May 23 Night to Honor Israel, go to www.cufical.org or call 888-752-1258. Advance tickets are $15, admission at the door is $20.

Have a John Hagee quote about the origin of anti-Semitism -

"How utterly repulsive, insulting, and heartbreaking to God for His chosen people to credit idols with bringing the blessings He had showered upon the chosen people. Their own rebellion had birthed the seed of anti-Semitism that would arise and bring destructive to them for centuries to come." (John Hagee, Jerusalem Countdown (2007) )

And if you are, why not "H O L L A!!!!" that from the rooftops as well ?

Did anyone google Hagee to read about the many sources that point out his "heresy"? His anti-gay and anti gay marriage statement that if that ever happened in this country it would the path to ruin?. And the article: Pastor John Hagee – Cornerstone Church Ministry, Heresy, Divorce & Dirty Deeds which exposes what is in the title? Remember the McCain and Hagee flap?

Before being so proud to be associated with this this guy, I think it would be enlightening to do so.

FROM THE AUTHOR: Yes, I looked into all of the anti-Hagee allegations. But, rather than simply googling it, as you suggested, I went to original sources. Hagee's supposed anti-Catholic smear was promoted by the media to deflect attention from Obama's association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. In fact, Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League and the man who initiated those allegations, is now a friend of Hagee AND A MEMBER OF CUFI. Hagee's statement on gays and Katrina was a mistake, and he apologized for it. The McCain/Hagee flap was also manufactured by people trying to deflect attention from Rev. Wright. Indeed, many rabbis and other Jews pointed out that his remarks were consistent with their own beliefs.

But, the bottom line is that none of this has anything to do with CUFI. Whatever your political beliefs, CUFI has only one political agenda: the support of Israel. Whatever your social beliefs, CUFI has only one social agenda: the love of Jews. And, whatever your religious concerns, CUFI has only one religious agenda: obeying the Biblical prophesy cited in the article.

Obviously, you did not google Hagee to read about his depravity and the evil he is spewing. Nor did you contact Jews for Justice or the young J Street Jewish group. These two groups love Israel too but promote tolerance and love absent from Hagee's rants.

Like a friend said to me: "somehow it's hard to imagine an individual as being inclusive or tolerant of others when he spews comments like “Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans.”

“New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God,” Hagee said, because “there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came.

Isn't it interesting how he has been silent about God's actions when it comes to the horrendous tornadoes and floods in the Bible Belt and the oil rig disaster in the gulf. Are these disasters also God's judgment because some gays live there?

In view of these facts, I don't think a loving God would appreciate your saying for Him who would evoke a smile from Him and who would cause him to frown.

Fredric, I see that you ignored my quotes from Hagee regarding New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina. Your hero has not been a target of any media campaign. You will see that there are other fundamentalists who disagree and quote Biblical passages that show his interpretation are wrong in their opinion.

If you had checked with the two Jewish groups I mentioned (groups I belong to) you would have found that they support Israel too BUT are tolerant and do not like Hagee's vitriol. They want peace between Israel and Palestinians without control and domination by the Israelis. Evangelicals and Fundamentalists oppose Obama because they fear his promoting peace there may succeed and that will postpone "the end of the world."

Speaking of your seeing only what you want to see, I also already told you that your assumption (that I did not check into the groups you mentioned) is false. As a Jew I have worked with leaders of the local CUFI chapter for several years in planning annual Nights to Honor Israel. I have never met a more loving group of people than these Christian zionists. My Jewish friends have come to a NTHI with doubts and misgivings. They left drying their tears of joy at what they heard and saw. These Christians say NEVER AGAIN will Christians remain silent when their Jewish brethren are threatened, whether in Israel or elsewhere.

If Israel were to follow the path promoted by organizations such as Peace Now and J Street, there would soon be no Israel to support. These appeasers fail to acknowledge that the ultimate goal of Muslim leaders is to change the nature of Israel from a Jewish state to just another of the more than twenty Muslim states in the Middle East. I would suggest to Dale and J Street members that they direct their campaign for "love and tolerance" to Hamas and and the PLO and see how far that gets them. These organizations are dedicated by their charters to the destruction of Israel. This agenda is taught in their schools and preached in their mosques. How could that message be made any more clear? They must relish the help they are getting from Peace Now and J Street members who, if they lived in a new "Greater Palestine", would lose the freedoms they now enjoy.

I'm sorry to disrupt the Hagee adulation, but in Jerusalem Countdown (2007, Front Line books) John Hagee wrote that Hitler was part of an evil lineage of "half-breed Jews" descended from Esau. And, according to Hagee, the idol worship of the ancient Israelites gave rise to modern day anti-Semitism:

"How utterly repulsive, insulting, and heartbreaking to God for His chosen people to credit idols with bringing the blessings He had showered upon the chosen people. Their own rebellion had birthed the seed of anti-Semitism that would arise and bring destructive to them for centuries to come." (page 93 in my edition of the book)

Yes, Bruce I had read that too and thanks for pointing it out.

Fredric, As a friend emailed me, "Thanks for the info...read the article...also noticed that Hagee's compensation last year was $1.25 million besides all the perks. Over the high altar there should be a banner that reads: "Let u$ prey"
Hagee is a charlatan and is duping his followers.

There is merit to the argument that Arabs and Jews are equally responsible for this centuries long battle, and there are moderates in both camps as there are extremists and hardliners. Both are worrisome and can be deadly as history shows. The agendas of the latter are non-compromising as are Evangelicals and Fundamentalists since all feel that their direction and ownership of land in that area was promised to them by THEIR God.

Apologies for saying something is not the same as an apology for holding his beliefs. Had he not held/hold such beliefs he could not have said those vial things. So his apology means nothing.

Now we have an opportunity to support the nation of Israel. A nation which in a book called the Bible there was a prophesy that this nation would exist. Now we are wondering if you want to complain about history, or support Israel? That is the question asked in the article. This is about supporting Israel. I choose to support Israel.

My wife's entire [Ashkenazi Jewish] extended family line in Eastern Europe and Russia was wiped out in WW2, and Mr. Hagee's claim appears to place blame for that crime upon Jews themselves. It's abhorrent.

The remark about Hagee's income reminds me of a vignette from the life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a British Baptist and certainly one of the greatest preachers in history. He and his wife raised chickens and sold the eggs 'on the side.' They set the price and refused to dicker or discount or otherwise reduce the price for anyone, Christian or otherwise. This resulted in gossip and resentment about the Spurgeon's "greed." After both of their deaths in the late 1800's, this fact came to light: with the proceeds from egg sales the Spurgeon's had supported a missionary on a foreign field for decades. Connection with Hagee? You know what he gets, but you don't know what he gives. And you only know that because Pastor Hagee himself discloses it. He does not (obviously and commendably) disclose what he gives. The difference between the income and the outgo is not knowable for most of us, and should remain a private matter. Given this scenario, resentment over income is baseless (and pointless) guessing, and may someday prove as wrong as those who condemned the Spurgeons as 'greedy'. Things are rarely as they appear.

Bruce- I believe that the Talmud that teaches that Europeans are descendants from Esav/Edom (Esau), and that they would therefore be of Abrahamic descent. So the traditional Jewish perspective may indeed be that Hitler and many others of us who are of European descent are Edomites or "half-breeds", if you will. Similarly Ishmaelites descend from Yismoel (Ishmael) and they are "half-breeds" according to this logic.

The term "half-breed" is probably a poor choice of words, but the statement seems to have originated from traditional Judaism, perhaps as taught to Rev. Hagee by his good friend (Orthodox) Rav Aryeh Scheinberg. If I have Jerusalem Countdown, I can't find it and haven't read it. Traditional Judaism, however does not acknowledge the idea of a half-breed lineage- you are a Jew or you aren't- if your mom is, you are. (Maybe he was trying to explain to concept of a mamzer.)

Unmentioned here, is that the main heresy that Fundamentalist Christians feel Rev. Hagee is guilty of is "dual-covenant theology". They criticize Hagee for believing that Jews will go to Heaven! So your argument that Hagee is intolerant and mean is undermined by the fact that Hagee is accused of being too liberal. I don't know about you, but if someone is criticized from the left and the right, it usually means that they are a centrist.

I'm not a big fan of Rev. Hagee. I've heard him speak, and I like what he says, but his views about charismatic gifts aren't my thing, and he tends to hang out with a lot of people with whom I disagree. That said, I'm part of his CUFI coalition, because I like what he says about Israel, and because I fell a great calling to reconcile members of these two great Abrahamic faiths. I have looked into the passages that many on the anti-Zionist left cite about Hagee, and I have found them to be out-of-context, red herrings, lies, foolishness, and generally logically fallacious mishegoss,

As far as J-Street goes, now THERE is a BIASED AGENDA. They acknowledge/defend the fact that they have taken $844,000 from Arab/Muslim sources! They have dozens of Saudi connections! http://www.jstreet.org/page/j-street-myths-and-facts

If Rev. Hagee is who Bruce and Dale say he is, then why does Elie Weisel support him? What about Benjamin Netanyahu? Dennis Prager? Or the thousands of other Zionist centrist/conservative Israel-loving Jews? Hagee is a mensch!

So you agree with John Hagee that Hitler was a "half-breed Jew" ? Please don't tell me you're serious. Hagee's claim as to Hitler's alleged lineage is widely discounted by historians and the legend seems to trace to pre-WW2 smears created by opponents of Hitler, to damage Hitler's political career.

I forgot to mention that John Hagee also claims that Hitler was gay. So according to John Hagee the Shoah was perpetrated by a gay Jew. The claim is vile.

"I'm not a big fan of Rev. Hagee.... I have looked into the passages that many on the anti-Zionist left cite about Hagee, and I have found them to be out-of-context, red herrings, lies, foolishness, and generally logically fallacious mishegoss" - For a non-Hagee supporter you seem heavily invested in casting aspersions on Hagee's critics. And the "anti-Zionist left" ? - This is not about Zionism, pro or contra. It's about anti-Semitism.

Have some more quotes from John Hagee's book Jerusalem Countdown. On page 92 (my edition - there are multiple printings with different pagination) Hagee writes,

"It was the disobedience and rebellion of the Jews, God's chosen people, to their covenental responsibility to serve only the one true God, Jehovah, that gave rise to the opposition and persecution that they experienced beginning in Canaan and continuing to this very day."

Hagee then cites the 44th chapter of Jeremiah, on idol worship by the Israelites and, on the following page, declares,

"How utterly repulsive, insulting, and heartbreaking to God for His chosen people to credit idols with bringing the blessings He had showered upon the chosen people. Their own rebellion had birthed the seed of anti-Semitism that would arise and bring destruction to them for centuries to come."

So according to John Hagee, it would seem, my wife's entire family lineage in Russia and Eastern Europe was destroyed, in part, because the ancient Israelites are described in scripture as having once worshiped idols.

I can hardly imagine a more vicious and morally depraved form of theological vilification than that.

And there are many elements of Hagee's anti-Jewish vilification that cannot be in any way traced to the Talmud. Hagee has written (in "Day of Deception" - first published in 1996, republished in 2000) that European Jewish bankers, tied to the Illuminati, control America through the Federal reserve and have been scheming to undermine the economy by devaluing the dollar. Those claims are rather similar to claims made in the most infamous anti-Jewish propaganda film of all time, The Eternal Jew - produced under the supervision of Adolf Hitler's propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

I investigate the striking parallels in this 10 minute mini-documentary:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFoLzPChDXg

Why does Elie Wiesel support a man (John Hagee) who has promoted claims very similar to those from Nazi anti-Jewish propaganda ? Only Mr. Wiesel can say. But as my colleague Rachel Tabachnick wrote in an article for Zeek magazine, Elie Wiesel needs new friends:

Two more things.

On the Hurricane Katrina flap.

Former Chief Sephardic Rabbi Ovadia Yosef (and current spiritual leader of the Shas party) started the whole thing by blaming Katrina on the Gaza withdrawal, and the black residents of New Orleans ("Kushim") not studying Torah.

Rav Yosef's extreme views are not all that uncommon among the hard-core super-ultra-ultra-orthodox right.

Likewise, many of the statements from Rev. Hagee that have been falsely identified as being anti-Semitic are actually Orthodox or Ultra-Orthodox Jewish positions. (Not the feel-good J-Street / Reform/Renewal drivel that calls itself "Judaism".)

"Not the feel-good J-Street / Reform/Renewal drivel that calls itself "Judaism" " - Ah, you tip your hand ! You seem to be saying that Reform Judaism isn't real Judaism. That sounds rather similar to John Hagee's position.

And, you're flatly wrong in your claim that "Former Chief Sephardic Rabbi Ovadia Yosef (and current spiritual leader of the Shas party) started the whole thing by blaming Katrina on the Gaza withdrawal, and the black residents of New Orleans ("Kushim") not studying Torah."

John Hagee, Pat Robertson, and many other Christian Zionists have for many years been attributing natural disasters and other calamities to US foreign policy decisions concerning Israel. Indeed, there are entire books written about that. As Rachel Tabachnick writes in "Loving Israel, Demonizing Jew" (for Zeek Magazine - http://zeek.forward.com/articles/116247/ ),

"Overt anti-Semites have for centuries claimed that Jews exert supernatural control over society. In the Medieval era Jews were accused of causing droughts, crop failures and other natural disasters. Today, Jews are again being portrayed as collectively causing hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism attacks, illness, and more, but this supernatural is framed as pro-Israel. In these claims, God punishes innocent people around the world with tragedy when government policy alters from the course that Christian Zionist believe that God has planned for Israel and Jews.

Christian Zionists such as John P. McTernan’s, author of As American Has Done to Israel, have written entire books documenting disasters they claim to have befallen the U.S. due to policy in conflict with “God’s plan for Israel."

Mr. Wilson,

You may be well read within a very small circle of silly people who believe silly things. You may be able to see great conspiracies in subtle detail. (It is a sign of your insanity that you so accuse others of doing this as well). You may be able to twist words and shape ideas that enamor those who already believe as you do, and you may be the life of a very small party of narrow-thinkers.

But you're still wrong, foolish and a poor communicator. You seem have no ability to reach out to others with differing opinions, or to allow your own opinions to grow and change. I pity you, but moreover, I refuse to get involved in a battle of wits with an opponent so poorly armed. So do the internet a favor, and find a remote cabin, grow your hair long, give up on personal hygiene and write your manifesto - then mail us all copies.

Or if you are a Jew, make tshuvah, find a local observant orthodox rabbi and study truth. Smash your idols of prejudice, leftism and (yes) anti-Semitic (self?) Jew-Hatred and find the G-d of Yisrael. Join in the mitzvos that are the only hope for klal Yisrael and the survival of mankind. Memorize the passages in Sh'ma that say that the mitzvos of Yisrael cause the rain to fall or not, and embrace HaShem. It is will great love that I say this. Show real moral courage, open your heart that you may believe and find peace and wisdom.

I am not venturing opinions. I am quoting John Hagee's sermons and writing.

Have some more :

According to Mr. Hagee, European-based Rothschilds control the US economy through the Federal Reserve. Hitler and his Nazis promoted a very similar conspiracy theory. Such scapegoating and demomnization helped create anti-Jewish hatred that led to the Holocaust.

Here's Hagee's version

"The Federal Reserve has never been audited, and yet it totally controls the value of money in this country. It was formally authorized on December 23, 1913, over a Christmas holiday, when most of the U.S. Congress was gone. It is controlled by Class A stockholders. The major stockholder in America is David Rockefeller. While most of the stockholders are members of the so-called Eastern Establishment, allegedly the four largest stockholders are not even Americans but members of the Rothschild family of Europe" -- John Hagee, from page 51 of Day Of Deception (first printed in 1996 by Thomas Nelson, reprinted in 2000 by Thomas Nelson as part of a three book- in one trilogy billed as having sold "Over 1.1 million copies."
Mr. Hagee repeated these claims in a March 23, 2003 sermon that was broadcast internationally over Christian networks and also sold by John Hagee Ministries as a VHS cassette tape:

[16:00 in sermon] "Out of European history then comes a group of people who are, who call themselves the Illuminati. They were a group of Satanists. The word Illuminati comes from the word illuminate which means to enlighten. The Bible says Satan is an angel of light. Satan is an angel of light. The Illuminati were a super secret organization of international financial power brokers in Europe, who had as their goal a worldwide economic power, and they would rule the world through economic wealth."

[22:00 in sermon] "Now here are the four things that have to happen before the New World Order can come to power. One, there must be the destruction of the economic system, the monetary system.

It may be shocking to you but I believe that America's economic problems are not created by market conditions, they are planned and orchestrated to devalue and to destroy the value of the dollar. It was done by an unseen government that I'll discuss later in this message."

[24:00 in sermon] "Our economic destiny is controlled by the Federal Reserve system that is now headed by Alan Greenspan. Think about this. It is not a government institution. It is controlled by a group of Class A stockholders including the Rothschilds of Europe and the David Rockefellers of America."

You can find a good explanation of Christian Zionism at

Please take a moment to watch John Hagee's in his own words in "Pastor John Hagee's Preoccupation with the Jews" http://www.jewsonfirst.org/audio-video/Display5.aspx?id=5149

Hagee lobbies for war with Iran since he hopes it will hasten the "End of Days" and the rapture.

Hagee's preaching is disrespectful toward non-Orthodox Jews, women, gays, and all who don't fit his narrow Christianity.

FROM THE AUTHOR: As the critics became less and less relevant to my actual article and more and more bizarre in their logic, I chose to stay out of this discussion. But jhubers comment is twisting my article and purporting to expose a non-existent hypocrisy, so I do want to clarify.

The "unconditional love" of which CUFI spoke (read the article again, jhubers) was specifically directed at Jews. Christ was Jewish, not Muslim. Jews gave them their Bible, not Muslims. They talk about a special relationship with Jews.

This does not mean, however, that they "preach pure hatred of Muslims," as jhubers claims. In fact, I met some of their observant Muslim friends. Indeed, two of them traveled half way around the world to attend a wedding of other Muslim friends.

It is not that I am oblivious to hatred. It is just that, as I read these comments, all the hatred and demonization seems to be coming from the critics of CUFI.

I am the Eastern Regional Coordinator for Christians United For Israel, and have been a pastor and Christian Zionist for over 25 years. The last 15+ years I have lived in the center of a large, Sunni Muslim community in Sacramento. I love my neighbors and they me. The little children call me, "Victor Baba" (grandpa Victor).
They are in no means moderate followers of the Muslim faith, as they are in no ways militant in their expression of faith. I have unconditional love for them and preach it all around our nation. Big difference indeed.

The earlier remark about Pastor Hagee's income reminded me of a vignette from the life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Spurgeon, a British Baptist, is among the greatest preachers the world has ever known. He and his wife had chickens. They sold eggs 'on the side.' They set the price and aggravated people all over London because the would not dicker, discount or otherwise lower the price for anyone, Christian or not. People groused about this, called them 'greedy', etc.
After the Spurgeon's deaths in the late 1800's, this fact came to light: through their egg sales the Spurgeon's supported a missionary on a foreign field for decades. The connection with Pastor Hagee is this: Things are rarely as they appear to anyone, particularly to the resentful. We know something about Pastor Hagee's income because he discloses it. We know nothing about his giving because he (quite rightly) does not disclose it. None of us can "do the math." And that's as it should be. This being the case, in our ignorance we should all be smart enough to not involve ourselves in baseless accusations and pointless guesses. The facts might embarrass us if they were known. Since these facts are properly private, silence on the subject is the most prudent approach.
