If you decide to ride on the Light Rail without proper fare this weekend, RT Police will find you.

Regional Transit began a series of crackdowns earlier this month on riders riding illegally.

On my transfer to the Meadowview Train at the 16th Street station Downtown last week, a dozen of RT Police rushed the train before it left for the next route.

Each police officer checked each rider for their tickets or their transit passes.

Those who didn’t have fare were issued tickets containing a fine.

For the riders who got off at the previous station were welcomed by another group of officers awaiting to check for their proof of fare.

RT has lost tens of thousands of dollars in recent years as the result of unpaid fares.

The stings of checking for fares by RT Police have been conducted at various locations and times throughout the Light Rail Transit lines.

Tickets for the light rail system are available for purchase at every light rail station. Valid RT Bus transfers as well as valid college ids are also acceptable forms of passes for Light Rail.

Good. I hate subsidizing cheapskates. Why not train all RT security to check tickets - I see a lot of black and yellow security guards who could be doing something useful (and lucrative).

I know it'd be expensive to implement initially, but has anyone done a long term cost analysis of changing the fare procedures of RT so that it's MANDATORY to purchase a ticket to ride.

I don't think I've been on many systems (and I get a kick out of going and riding public transit) that work on the honor system quite like RT. It'd be a good thing. There'd be less of the critters who get on late at night and maybe RT could actually increase service sometime.

Sorry folks, but this is an awful way to try to fill the deficit gap for public transit! The fares are too high already for the working poor; people need to get to their job and high fares encourage people to cheat.

The economy of Sacramento depends on a healthy RT system. We need a reliable way to get people from point A to point B. This is vital for business! Therefore, it only makes sense to subsidize!!

Subdidize, of course! I firmly believe that public transport has wide-ranging and not-easy-to-quantify financial and ecological and social benefits. Make the fare 25c if you like but enforce it for all.
The guy with the black plastic sack full of bottles is probably not paying his way - get him off!

If they can build new light rail lines and install fancy electronic signs instead of implementing light rail pay stations , I guess they don' t really need the money they loss.
