"Beta" is a little bit of shop talk I guess. In our case it refers to the release state of our web software application. We built our online newspaper platform from scratch. Beta just means that our initial release has not been tested enough to be considered 100% robust and sturdy.
We will be "beta testing" our application by launching it in a specific neighborhood. We call that neighborhood our "beta" area because, like the application, we are just testing our processes in preparation for a full launch.
Our "beta" neighborhood is the quadrant of downtown between the Sacramento river, Capitol City Freeway, 16th Street, and N street. This area includes the neighborhood of Southside Park, part of Richmond Grove, and part of the R street corridor.
As a user, and especially as a writer, you may experience technical problems or poor site design. We need you to help us by giving us constructive suggestions to make your experience better. We are flexible and we know that there will be some issues. Please help us make The Sacramento Press the very best site for local news and information.
The short answer is that "tags" are words to describe and categorize. A "tag cloud" is a visual representation of the relative popularity of those "tags" our readers and writers use to categorize articles on The Sacramento Press.
OK, in plain english now:
If a story is about say, fish, a reader like you can tag is "fish." Then when you go to your profile you will see the word "fish" in your tag cloud. When you click on the word you will see all the articles that you tagged with the word "fish."
Even better, you have helped categorize this article for everyone on the site. If you click the "tag cloud" button in the green bar above you will see the most popular tags every reader and writer has used to describe every article on the site. The bigger the word, the more it has been used. So you get to see very quickly what people think all the articles on the site are about and you can click on any of the words in the tag cloud to see a list of articles that have been tagged with that word.
That is the short answer at least, we will have a better answer up soon and I will link to it at that time.
