Tyreke Evans made history as a Sacramento King on April 12. Tyreke Evans had 24 points against the Houston Rockets to secure his spot in the history books as one of four rookies in NBA history to average at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. With this, Tyreke joins a group of elites by the names of LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Oscar Robertson.
That’s pretty good company to have in the record books. Along with being on that list, he is also on another list. There were only three players in the NBA that were part of this 20-5-5 club this season. The only three people this year to do it are LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and now Tyreke Evans. That’s a pretty elite list to be on, especially as a rookie.
Tyreke did all of this on a Sacramento Kings team that finished last season with 17 wins. If Tyreke was on a better team, he would have had an even higher number of assists. Many times Tyreke sets up a teammate, they miss the shot.
Even with Tyreke’s unbelievable rookie year, some people tend to still believe that this Rookie of the Year race is still close. This is baffling. How can this R.O.Y. race be close if Tyreke is in the record books with Jordan, LeBron, and Oscar Robertson, and no other rookie this year is on the same page?
To me, even if this ROY race was close in the beginning of the month, Tyreke secured the award last night. Even if Stephen Curry was making it close, he has never had the same numbers as Tyreke this year. He has gotten a lot of hype because he is Del Curry’s kid, and he is in a bigger market. Simply put, Tyreke locked his place in history last night with the 20-5-5 record, but he also locked up the Rookie of the Year award, yet ESPN still didn’t even mention his performance on Sportscenter.
Congratulations Tyreke Evans on a great 20-5-5 rookie season, and thanks for bringing hope to Kings fans like me for the first time in a couple of years!
Evans: 19.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.5 steals, 3.3 turnovers, percentages (.443, .200, .750)
Curry: 26.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 8.1 assists, 2.6 steals, 3.1 turnovers, percentages (.469, .472, .895)
Its been like this for months now...Curry has consistently dominated most statistical categories. Giving it to Evans is like giving him the Good Attendance Award in school. Yes it took Curry longer to find how he fit in with his team since Monte Ellis shared a similar niche...but ever since he figured it out his statistics dominate Evans' statistics. You can make Rookie of the Year into the Good Attendance Award if you like...but it doesn't change the fact that the biggest proven talent in this rookie class so far is Curry...and its not close.
Just seems that the award should go to the best proven talent in the rookie class this year. That is Curry. Evans gets the award for most consistent from start to finish (aka Good Attendance Award).
I would just say this...if you could choose only one of them to start your team with who would you take based on how they performed their rookie years? I think the answer is clearly Curry.
