Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner's book"'Mount Pleasant" has hit the New York Times Bestseller list today, all but beating out his rival for California's coveted Gov. seat, Meg Whitman and her book "The Power of Many".

Last night Poizner spent two hours with potential consitutuents at the Borders bookstore on Fair Oaks Blvd., signing autographed copies of his book, posing for pictures, and fielding questions from some folks who are still decidedly on the fence with regards to his candidacy. Poizner handled himself gracefully under fire, and with poise(pun intended). He was clear and concise, stating matter of factly what he envisions for the state and what his stance is on many of California's heated issues, including furloughs for state workers, and the dreadful, and ever spiriling downward budget, among other things.

Though I was there primarily to take pictures of the event, I couldn't help but over hear some of the conversations going on between Poizner and some of the voters in the room. One woman in particular sternly walked up to the table and graciously accepted her copy of "Mount Pleasant" then proceeeded to state, 'I am still not sure who I will be voting for in this race, sell me'. This writer was impressed with the response by Mr. Poizner, again simply stating what it is he stands for.

Poizner is still trailing Meg Whitman in the polls at this point and stated as early as Tuesday of this week that he and his campaign is spending roughly $1 Million dollars a week in advertising to counter Whitman's significant campaign spending. "Mount Pleasant" of course is drawing some much needed attention to California's woeful education system, and should draw in some voters for Poizner.

California's 'woeful education system' is WOEFUL because of attempts by Republicans, starting with noneother than Governor Ronald 'Senile' Reagan, and continuing with the GOP's attacks on teachers and complete denial and ignorance on how issues like poverty affect educational outcomes, no doubt perpetuated by Mr. Poizner and the myopia of Republican onslaughts against public education.

I have not read Mr. Poizner's book, but I have read former Secty of Ed Diane Ravitch's DEATH AND LIFE OF GREAT AMERICAN SCHOOLS, which is also on the NYTimes best seller list, which is a scathing review of privatization (masking as 'choice') and charterization moves over the past three decades. It is a succinct and scientifically premised narrative of the abject failure of such 'theories' by the GOP and mistaken Dem's that posed as 'reform' but do little to actually reform education into something desirable and necessary. Rather, such largely Republican programs act to divert funding from REAL public schools and train it on a few select private institutions and charters, which currently provide service (I will not use the term 'educate') for a grand total of three percent of school age children in America, while 97% remain in public institutions diminished by such funding. Ravitch's arguments lie in focusing on the 97% rather than the 3%, and to stop blaming teachers for feeder effects of poverty and culture that impose greater and greater harm to children attempting to learn.

I am reminded of an old adage that goes, "a child must eat to learn". Such sentiments seem lost on Republicans, for they have historically done NOTHING to aid poverty, and continue their war on people of the most modest means, who earn a paycheck while doing the heavy lifting of our society...

Poizner seems no exception, especially when he curries favor with the teabagger set....or some Foxnoise matron who buys his book, and utters 'sell me on you'....

I read the review of Ravitch's book on Slate and it looked very intruiging, all the more so considering her unwavering support for NCLB during the Bush II era. I plan on buying it for my mom, a local Middle School teacher at Evergreene (once River City High School, no longer). I have not heard enough on education, specifics at least, coming from any of the candidates at any level of government up for election this year from Ashby to Dickinson to Poizner.
