The Sacramento Police Department has arrested 25-year-old Casey Brown for the murder of 68-year-old Bernice Nickson.

On April 10, 2010 at 4:12 a.m., the Sacramento Police Department responded to 8th Street near Capitol Mall after officers from the California Highway Patrol observed a female lying on the ground with a possible stab wound. The female was transported to U.C. Davis Medical Center where she later died from her injuries.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Using surveillance cameras operated by Regional Transit, detectives were able to determine a general description and initial direction of travel of the suspect. A witness contacted officers at the crime scene and advised that he had located a knife a few blocks away. Detectives believe that the knife is related to this incident. Sacramento Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team was requested by detectives to assist. The Search and Rescue team used K9’s to track the suspect’s direction of travel which led to additional surveillance video from Westfield Downtown Plaza Security. The mall video led to a witness who was able to provide information for a composite sketch. Based on the composite, a Sacramento Police Community Service Officer recognized the suspect from a previous contact which led to his identity.

On April 12, 2010, the Police Department’s Career Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Casey Brown in West Sacramento. A motive for this crime has yet to be determined. Detectives believe that Brown stabbed and killed Nickson. Brown will be booked into the Sacramento County Jail for murder.

Detectives would like to thank the Sacramento Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team for volunteering their time, Regional Transit and Westfield Downtown Plaza Security for their surveillance videos, and the community members who came forward with information all of which helped to solve this murder.

Yeah, facial tattoos are probably not the best idea if your planning on getting away with murder.

That is so crazy! I have known him since elementary school, haven't seen Casey in about 4 years. I would have never thought of him as the type that would commit murder.

If you knew him well you would know that he is NOT the type. There has been no conviction! He will be home soon.

I wouldn't either, Liz. I've known him just as long, and he's aways been a kind sweet guy (with a rough edge... but I know NO ONE without a rough edge!). I'm really hoping Casey didn't do it... but if that's what happened, that's what happened.

I can't get over this. Of all the people I know Casey is the last one I would have figured to commit murder. Always very happy and easy going... Obviously the sketch is of him I just really hope that witness was mistaken somehow.

I'm shocked that if you do know him that you would believe he could do this. I know the media didn't paint a pretty picture. But it's there thoughts and they don't count.

Ive know casey for the longest time, saw him last about a month or 2 ago before he was planning to go to cali. casey is more like a geek than a nutball, i think this is a missleading capture. He might look crazy but in reality he is one of the most trust worthy, nicest, caring people i know, Great father to his little girl and enduring friend, PLEASE! take this case further down the hole to find all the details not just arrest someone by his looks.

Did anyone notice the sketch had a definite Latino look to it? Why would they automatically "color" the sketch.... makes me wonder about racial profiling in the Justice system.

Sometimes "Better Living Through Chemistry" can have unexpected results. Casey may be the nicest guy and greatest father, but if he got high on something, or if God forbid, someone slipped him something, then for a time, he wasn't the Casey that everyone remembers and evidently valued a great deal. Or maybe he was on anti-depressants, which can have catastrophic results. It is quite a stretch to believe that there is someone else out there with self-imposed tire tracks running the length of the right side of his face, the same fashion sense in earrings and the same-shaped face running around stabbing 68-year-old women. What a tragedy, no matter who is responsible. I have a great deal of faith in Jan Scully and her amazingly dedicated staff. Justice will be served.

I know these last few months have been hell on you, but i just can't picture you going over the edge. you have always had a kindness about you no matter what u were going thru and u always worked it out. how could this be, please help me to understand!!!! i'm sad for my daughter who just lost her father and now her best friend. god be with you, son.

Nobody would have thought Casey would kill anyone, but the evidence doesn't look good. He was into some hard stuff in High School. He could have been out of his mind high one something.

I have known Casey since we were kids and he was ALWAYS the sweet loving funny guy. Nothing about this makes sense. This is not the Casey we grew up with!! I just PLEASE ask that we get all of the facts before we judge. We were not there, god only knows what really happened...

Ok. I really appreciate all the comments about everyone who knows Casey being a nice sweet person. But the paper made a hugh mistake and mislead people. It said thanks for solving the murder... The murder has not been solved!!! Also where did it say anywhere that he was seen stabbing anyone? It did not state any facts other than he was apparently in the area. No one knows any facts or it was be a closed shut case. All lthe specutaling is doing nothing positive. I ask that EVERYONE should hold back on any judgement or comments until all the facts are in. I also think that the paper has a responsibility to corrent the statement about a murder being solved. My heart goes out to the family of the victim. Innocent until proved guilty. My son is also a victim here. See you soon Casey...

THE WITNESS SAW CASEY RUNNING, MAYBE CASEY SAW WHAT HAPPENED AND TOOK OFF RUNNING. I DATED CASEY BACK IN THE DAY. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED BETTER FELT MORE LOVED THAN HOW CASEY MADE ME FEEL. I HOESTLY FEEL CASEY IS ANOTHER VICTIM IN WHAT THE STATE CALLS A JUSTICE SYSTEM. CASEY ALWAYS HAD THE WOMENS BACKS! NOT ONCE WOULD HE ALOOW ANY ONE TO TALK DOWN TO A FEMALE NOR GIVE THEM CRAP! HE STOOD UP FOR EVERY FEMALE AROUND HIM AND THEN SOME. FOR HIM TO "STAB" A FEMALE IS OUTRAGIOUS. HASANYONE THOUGHT THE MURDERER COULD HAVE BEEN THE "wITNESS" WHAT WERE THEY DOING IN THE SAME LOCATION? WHY WERE THEY UP AT THE SAME TIME? I THINK CASEY WAS THE WITNESS AND THEY PROFILED HIM DUE TO HIS TATS, AND BODY SHAPE,SIZE AND ATTITUDE! HE NEVER TOOK CRAP, STOOD UP FOR WHAT WAS RIGHT AND WAS VERY OUTSPOKEN. WHO'S TO SAY HE WASN'T NEXT IN THIS INCIDENT BUT WHEN THE MURDERER HEARD HIM RUN, CALLED IT INTO POLICE IDENTIFYING CASEY AS THE PERPATRATOR.???

WHEN I LOOKAT THAT PIC THAT WAS DRAWN I LOOK AROUND ME. I SEE ALMOST HALF THE POPULATION WITH SIMULAR TATS ON THEIR FACE, SIMULAR FACIAL FEATURES AND THE NOSE, IF THE "WITNESS" ACTAULLY SAW CASEY THEY WOULDHAVE COMENTED THE NOSE WAS UCH MORE BUTTON LIKE AND NOT FLAT LIKE A BLACK MAN'S NOSE! (NOT POINTING FINGERS AT ANY RACE BUT IT'S A KNOWN FACT BLACK PEOPLE HAVE FLATTER NOSES) i onestly feel casey ran into some bad people down there some how ade them really angry and set him up. now noone down there believes him and he is taking the fall for another mans dirty deed. please pray for the casey we know and love. he had to be set up. whose o say he wasn't told to be a certain place at a certain time and when he was "BAM" framed??? any one think of that???

This is the type of article that exposes the dangers of "citizen reporting" and the ongoing need for professional journalism. The last line, ending with "...with information all of which helped to solve this murder" would have been edited out prior to publication in a real newsroom setting...and would have never been written in the first place by a professional journalist/reporter! A murder is only "solved" on fictional TV shows, or in a courtroom - if then - but certainly not upon a person's arrest. It's been a few months since this happened. I'll be interested in checking the status once I'm through with this post.

Norm Leong is the PIO for the Sacramento Police Department. It is likely that this was the exact copy from a press release that went out to media outlets and everyone else on their e-mail list. Norm is not claiming to be a professional reporter and press releases are always available to the public. This has been the case even before there were any citizen journalists and websites for them to post on.

My point is that I'm not sure that it exposes anything wrong or dangerous about citizen journalism but instead might expose a need for better editing of press releases put out by Sac PD.

Hi Casey - while I was majoring in journalism in the '90's, this was the FIRST thing we learned: Never, ever use a press release without confirming the facts - establishing your own sources - and re-writing it. Using a press release verbatim is lazy, dishonest journalism.

Well since Norm writes most of the releases I don't see the need for him to re-write his own words, do you? Although I do agree that if someone ELSE was posting his release that would be necessary.

Also, as a side note, when we ask people to post their press releases on SP, we're generally just asking them to post as a service to the public. For example, I asked Linda Tucker to post the release about free parking about an hour ago.

We're not trying to pass a press release off as hard-hitting journalism or even a story at all, but want the public to stay informed even if it's not story-worthy. In that sense, that's the cool thing about citizen journalism. Readers might not have otherwise had access to that info and it only took about 3 minutes for her (or anyone) to post.

But I definitely get what you're saying...

OK - In all of the fog, I lost sight of the fact that Norm was the one who posted the story in the first place! Time to take my pills now! LOL! Since you obviously get my point, no need for me to state it any futher than I've done to this point. Thanks, Casey! Keep smilin'!

Casey Kirk,
I enjoyed reading your information about the way this entire thing was reported. I (Casey's Mom) was floored when I read the part where they said "solved the morder" Im sure for any judy, if it gets to that, would have some impact. It's sad to think that most people believe what they read. I have faith in Casey and the system. Thanks again for your info. Janice
