The district director for City Councilman Ray Tretheway said Monday night that he took photos of City Council Candidate Angelique Ashby’s lawn signs in Natomas because he received a complaint that claimed the signs were posted illegally.

A YouTube video shows Roth watching Tretheway campaign manager Corrin Choppin remove Ashby signs in Natomas on Friday. Tretheway and Ashby are running against each other for the District 1 seat.

At a Monday press conference, Sacramento Police Officers’ Association Vice President Mark Tyndale questioned whether Roth has been making honest statements about the incident.

Tyndale took issue with comments in a KCRA 3 news story. “KCRA ran a quote from Dan Roth indicating that a complaint was made to the city’s 311 phone line that morning and that Dan Roth was acting on that complaint,” according to a media statement from SPOA and Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522.

Tyndale said that if Roth was making untrue statements, he should resign or be fired.

But Roth told reporters Monday night that he had received a complaint from a resident about signs Ashby had placed at sites on El Centro Road and at the intersection of El Centro and Arena Boulevard. He said he did not send the complaint to 311.

Roth noted that he received the complaint e-mail when he was preparing to attend the groundbreaking of a new fire station in Natomas.
“It’s 8:14 (a.m.)," Roth said. “I’m getting ready for an event. I thought I had forwarded 311 and city of Sacramento. I think I probably was like, ‘I’m running late,’ slammed down my computer, (and) I didn’t hit ‘send.’ ”

Roth provided reporters with copies of the resident’s complaint e-mail Monday night.

The e-mail was addressed to Ashby; Roth said he was blind copied on the e-mail. Resident Ron Dwyer-Voss claimed in the April 9 e-mail that Ashby’s signs were located in illegal areas.

The complaint should have been forwarded to code enforcement, Roth said.

“(Choppin) shouldn’t have done it,” Roth said. “And that’s what we’ve been saying. He shouldn’t have touched the signs. He didn’t break any laws ... It’s the ethic — never touch your opponent’s stuff.”

Roth claimed that the signs were in illegal areas. He said he did not touch any of the signs. Roth also said he took a photo of one of the signs.

“Corrin didn’t break a law,” Roth said. “I didn’t break a law.”

Ron Dwyer-Voss is a contributor to Tretheway's campaign and was on the board at Natomas Unified School District -- well within the Capitol Campaigns circle of status quo politicians. (Capitol Campaigns is running Tretheway's campaign and is who employs sign-puller Corin Choppin.)

Dan Roth LIED about the complaint being sent to the City Operator (3-1-1 center) and he also LIED about not touching the signs himself -- there are NUMEROUS eyewitnesses who saw him tampering with signs that were LEGALLY placed as per City of Sacramento Code Section 15.148.600(K), which explicitly allows campaign signs in planting strips adjacent to sidewalks up to 90 days prior to election day.

Dan Roth should have referred Voss to Code Enforcement and should have kept his hands off the signs. Dan Roth should have discouraged Corin Choppin from tampering with the signs and distanced himself from such blatantly unethical activity -- instead, he is caught standing proudly next to Choppin as they waited for the pedestrian signal to cross the street so they could do more sign tampering, together, as a TEAM.

I believe the only thing these guys regret is BEING CAUGHT ON MY CAMERA and being exposed for their inexcusable unethical acts. The only thing they are truly sorry for is that this incident has gained national attention (the Associated Press picked this up and it has appeared in newspapers nationwide) and that their reputations are deservedly tarnished. Their rationalized excuses to reporters lack credibility and do not stand up to the least bit of scrutiny. I do not believe their apologies are sincere. They are a disgrace to democracy and a disgrace to District One.

Dan Roth's and Corin Choppin's actions in this incident and their dishonest rationalizations in its aftermath paint a clear picture of their shameless ethical standards. City Hall deserves better. We all do.

City Hall WILL have better if all of our neighbors get out on June 8 and vote Angelique Ashby into office. Now there is someone who will fight for ALL of District One, who will work effectively with the other City Council members to craft viable solutions to the myriad problems that are facing our beloved Sacramento. We need the energy, vision, dedication, and ability to focus on the truly important issues that Angeliqe Ashby will bring to City Hall.

I bet to differ.

Every single time I have seen Angelique Ashby appear at City Hall she has behaved in a petulant immature snarling manner, much like her political benefactor, KJ himself. Of late she has done nothing but nitpick at Natomas difficulties, blaming Tretheway for everything from the floodzone issues to world hunger, much as KJ did against Heather Fargo, but completely lacking in substance.

With particular regard to police issues, she blames Tretheway for lax coverage in the North Natomas area, when in fact he can do very little other than to ask that the PD make a better effort. If elected she will no more be able to muscle coverage of the area than the man in the moon, though he's no doubt more charming.

Given that the cops back her, she will no doubt allow them a licentiousness with regard to brutality, for which this department is legend, recently reverting back to some very bad behaviours of decades past. And without strong oversight, and support for an oversight commission, both the cops and the firedepartment will be free to conduct themselves in a renegade manner -- remember the sex parties at the Radisson???

Ashby lacks the maturity for public office - PERIOD. She seems arrogant and unpleasant at best and precisely the type of person who should NEVER be granted authority -- witness KJ and his immature petulance on this very public stage...

VOTE TRETHEWAY!

These signs are called yard signs for a reason. They belong only in supporters yards with their permission. On the public right of way or private property without specific permission they are simply another form of graffiti and litter. Placing signs around the site of an opponents official function is a childish trick best left to Republicans. I would encourage Ms. hbrickner to address her statement "We need the energy, vision, dedication, and ability to focus on the truly important issues to Mr. Sharward. Unfortunately reporting violating signs to code enforcement only adds to the problems of an understaffed department. A better idea might be a hefty per sign fine for all illegally placed signs and those left after an election. That might make a small dent in a more important issue, the city's massive deficit.

unfortunatly, Justin you are more right than wrong, at least when it comes to politics.

Tretheway is loser, and a corrupt lying snake who wears a nice old mans costume. Unfortunatly, he may win - It's sad this cow town is so lame, it has a lot of potential, but not with any of the current Council members.

If Tretheway's campaign had come clean about what they were doing when they were first caught, we wouldn't still be talking about this. Once again, it's the lies, not the original act, that get you in the end. First, they were "doing her a favor" by taking down the signs that were supposedly illegal because they were blocking the public right of way (which they weren't). We're supposed to believe they wanted to save Ashby from bad publicity (then why was Roth there taking pictures?). Give me a break! Then there was the 311 call from a resident that turned out to be an e-mail from a Tretheway campaign contributor. Time to stop digging the hole deeper. Give us an honest explanation of how it was that Roth and Choppin were on that corner, and why they were there. Tell us whether or not there was a code violation, and if you claim there was, cite the section and verse. Then maybe we can move on to issues that really matter to District 1.
