Efforts to establish a streetcar line between West Sacramento and Sacramento could advance if the project is awarded grant money from the federal government, West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon said last week.

The West Sacramento/Sacramento line is competing with other projects for a grant of up to $25 million for streetcars, he said.

If the project is selected, the funds would establish a line from West Capitol Avenue in downtown West Sacramento to 100 Capitol Mall, the location of the Embassy Suites in Sacramento, according to Cabaldon.

Both cities would like to run the streetcar to a variety of locations, he said, but initial funding would get the streetcar started.

West Sacramento and Sacramento have been working together on the project. Yolobus also is involved, Cabaldon said.

Which agency would operate the streetcar is unclear, but there is talk of working with Regional Transit, Cabaldon said, adding that he hopes to learn whether funds have been granted in a couple of months.

Your kidding right? My employer just reduced service by 22%, I am losing my job and these folks think they can sustain a streetcar system once it has been built? I am all for the project, but the capital money is an entirely different thing than operating money. Are we going to build it only to run it across the river for a year and then park it because we can't afford to maintain and operate it? Am I the only one that sees the disconnect here?

You lost your job so we should stop building infrastructure? Maybe we shouldn't have built the Golden Gate Bridge because unemployment was at 30% during 1937.

Patrick,

No, we should not stop building infrastructure just because I lost my job. We should, however be realistic in terms of what infrastructure projects are more needed than others. While I understand that the 25 Million West Sacramento and Sacramento are competing for are Federal TIGER monies, one has to remember that just this past Monday, RT cut service by 22 % because of an 11 Million dollar budget deficit........and the Feds have 25 Million to give away for a Streetcar. project.

West Sacramento voters already approved funding for operation of the streetcar.

RT's problem is that is has been chasing sprawl for twenty-five years. The streetcar would be situated in a place where population density could support it and where it could actually drive further infill.
