I was sitting in my garage with the garage door open. My friend was at my home using my dryer. It was such a nice evening.  I felt so relaxed.

My son asked, 'Mom can I go around the corner to Tony's house." It was approximately 7:30pm. I know Tony and his family and knew he would be okay going to Tony's house. Unfortunately I didn't know what would occur next.

As I talked to my friend I watched my son walk to the corner. I smiled as she said, "He sure is getting big and handsome." I looked at him walking with the cute skip he had as a child and said, "Yes, and he's still my baby." My son turned the corner.

As soon as he turned the corner I heard a "POW" It sounded familiar. It sounded like a gunshot. I took off running to the corner, screaming, 'DJ, DJ" And I heard, 'POP, POP, POP, POP, POP, POP, POP, POP, POP, POP.' I begin to cry, 'DJ, DJ, God, please don't let my son be hurt.". My friend was yelling "call his phone, call his phone."

I nervously called the number, "Please answer, please answer, Please DJ, answer." I screamed running down 21st street, 'DJ" All I could see was patrol cars, lights and officers." My son answered the phone, Mom, Mom, I hear the gunshots. I'm trying to come home. I'm okay, I'm by the bushes. I'm afraid to move." I told him, " stay put, I will come get you to bring you home. Don't move til I get to you" I went to my son and grabbed him so tight and headed back home.

A neighbor outside said, "the police sent the K9 in that house ( a block from Tony's) and I think the young man in the house shot the K9, that was the one shot and then they open fire. I know he's dead."

An officer ran to a patrol car carrying the canine yelling, "Open the door, Open the door." The canine was rushed off by the patrol car appearing to need emergency medical care. Another person standing on the street said, "I guess they don't need to call an ambulance right away for the guy because I know that person is dead."

More officers arrived at the scene. Yellow tape was placed  near the bushes where my son was and tape roped off the entire area. I held my son so tight. And I prayed, 'God bless the city of Sacrament and  God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."

AMEN

I just noticed I haven't changed the clock I used when I wrote it was approximately 7:30 it should read "it was approximately / after 8:30pm " Also I heard 6 shots after the initial one - the rest just seemed like echos- playing over and over in my mind reminding me of another time. The area is still blocked off and neighbors still standing in the area that is taped off. The youth is dead. The canine will recover. I'm not sure what actually happened. I thought a young lady was handcuffed outside the house. I'm told it was a home invasion with one suspect. We (my son and I) don't know the residents of the house or how long they lived there. Their was one murder on my street several years ago when two neighbors argued and one middle aged adult shot and killed the other middle aged adult on the front lawn. But basically my street is safe. My neighbors and I all know each other and many have lived in their homes for over 20years. But I have often heard gunshots and even called 9-1-1 after hearing gunshots on nearby streets. I often hear helicopters and often rush out of the street for patrol units rushing to crime scenes. I would love to one day wake up with little need for additional officers and and live without or with less helicopters, without or with less gunshots, without or with less sirens, without running to a child I brought into this world praying that the gunshots aren't aimed at him or praying he isn't shot- caught in the crossfire just walking to a friend's house. I laid over one son 5 years ago as gunshot ranged, praying that the next bullet takes my life and not that of my child- I don't want to lay over another child praying I am the one shot and not my child. I just want to live and I just want my children to live and know freedom. For the life of me, I don't think that should be too much to ask.

Rhonda,

I hope your family is safe and stays safe... What a godawful feeling it must be to feel your child is in harm's way...

I don't know what to say, but that I hope you and yours are safe....

Take care....

Thank you so very much. It is what it is and today I realize just how more outspoken I have to be. In the words of Mary Pleasant, "We stand on the shoulders of those before us." (I'm so glad I saw that movie this weekend) and "I'd rather be a corpse than a coward." Their is too much going on and to many one-sided stories and too many people both in the community and media releases where everyone wants to make themselves look good - I'm looking for the truth. Only in truth will we find our way to the light out of this darkness. Thank you again. My family is safe.

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating a home invasion which resulted in an armed suspect being shot and killed by officers.

On March 15, 2010, at 8:35 p.m., the Police Department responded to the 2000 block of O’Neil Way on a home invasion in progress. The victim was able to call 9-1-1 advising of the ongoing crime and also left the phone line open as the armed suspect tied up the victims and began to search through the residence. The victims were later identified as a 17-year- old female and a 5-year-old male Asian.

Upon arrival, officers detained a 23-year-old male Asian as he was walking away from the area. The subject was later found to be associated with the home invasion.

A sergeant and four officers took position in front of the house. To prevent the suspect from fleeing, an officer and his K9 partner “Bandit” covered the back of the house. The officer and the K9 in the back of the house observed the suspect come out into the backyard. The suspect and the officer exchanged gun fire which resulted in K9 “Bandit” being shot in the chest. The suspect retreated back into the house and then ran out through the front door still armed with a handgun. The suspect failed to follow the officer’s commands to drop the weapon and was shot by fours officers positioned at the front of the house.

The victims were found tied up but uninjured inside the residence. The officer transported his K9 partner to an area hospital where he was last diagnosed as being in stable condition.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Based on the preliminary investigation, it is believed the suspect, a male Asian in his 30’s, came to the door and using a ruse gained entry to the house. The suspect produced a gun and tied up the victims. During the crime, it appeared the suspect was communicating with a second accomplice by cell phone. Detectives believe the second accomplice was the male who was detained by officers in the area. It is believed that the suspects are from out of town. It is unknown at this time why the suspects were in Sacramento and why they chose the victim’s residence as their target. The investigation is on going and at this time no further details are being provided.

Per department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. The officers involved in the shooting have the following tenure with the Sacramento Police Department: 1, 4, 4, 5 and 11 years of service. The Sacramento Police Department is working on this investigation in conjunction with the City’s Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.

Thank you for the update. I have to run I didn't get any sleep last night. At 4am someone ranged my doorbell asking for someone I don't even know. They asked twice and when I went to the window I didn't see a car in front of my house. I was up most of the night. But I want to say, I'm glad the victims are unharmed. It appears the 16yr old girl went from tied up to temporarily handcuff and that is understandable since the officers had to secure the area and make sure they too are safe. That house has lots of young people of all different ethnic backgrounds hanging outside. I don't know what is going on there but I know my son is to stay clear from the area. Also, the one gunshot , the first one, sounded different. I don't know about "exchanging gunfire" the person shot the dog (which is a police canine/ a peace officer) I understand shooting back. But the man, according to all the people watching as the events transpired, was not exchaning gunfire- he shot once- and as far as commands the many gunshots heard immediately afterwards- when was their time for commands? I don't think a sentence could have gotten out. I'm not saying the shooting wasn't justified but I will say the media release well, nevermind, it too is understandable. It was a home invasion and their have been multiple in the area where one or more victims have been shot and a black youth victim not too long ago died in one. Again, I'm not saying the shooting wasn't justified but the release is a little colorful.

helicopters circled my street and the street behind me for the last 20 minutes or so according to the SPD helicopter site their is a burglary in progress. Yesterday's helicopter site also listed a burglary in progress which later turned out to be a home invasion. I called my son again to make sure he is out of the way and to let me know when he is near our home so I can meet him. Two days in a row...... I really do want to live without constantly hearing sirens, helicopters.... I appreciate and respect law enforcement for doing a great job apprehending suspects. I just wish their were less suspects, less crime...more efforts on prevention, resources, employment.... Three of my friends son's died in home invasion robberies. One friend, Natasha, was tied up and helpless she and her younger children sat unable to move as her 18yr old son was shot in the head. (Last month while working at a local check cashing on 24th and Florin the store was robbed at gunpoint....) She had to revisit the pain of the arm gunmen who came into her home killing her son. The other, Toni, went to her son's to find him dead in a pool of blood in the bathtub and the other , Rochelle, helped her son move into his very first (and would be his last) apartment. She went to check on him and he was dead. A Meadowview mother, Patricia, I knew her family, sisters, neices, nephews, children.... she was an activist in the Meadowview area. Someone knocked on her door late- early moring hours- and said they were SPD, she went to the door, the armed gunmen pushed their way into the house trying to take the life of her son. Patricia stood and blocked them from killing her son- and she died, gunshot wounds. She was beautiful. Her children, especially her son were so harmed by the death.... I know how dangerous home invasions can be. I do sincerely appreciate the officers who arrived on the scene as quickly as they did yesterday.
