In the two and a half weeks that I've been a Sacramentan, I've discovered many things that I like.  Some of these things I have included in my series of "Discovering Sacramento" articles.  I really like taco trucks. I like sports bars in general, and Sneakers in particular.  I like the Garden Highway, and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to like the Virgin Sturgeon.  But there are a lot more things that I like, which haven't made it into my articles.  With this fact in mind, I have decided to begin a new storyline.  I'm calling it "Stuff I Like".  I'm going to try and keep these posts brief and to the point.  This is what I like, heres why, badda bing, badda boom. Short attention span reading for those of you in a hurry.  You can get in and get out, like a successful jewelry heist.  Only instead of diamonds, you're fleeing the scene with knowledge, the knowledge of what I like.  And you can't put a price tag on something like that.  Or go to prison for it. So, without further ado, here is some stuff I like.

I like hotel bars, and I like places with history, and I like 2 dollar beers on draft.  So imagine my glee when I stumbled in to the Clarion Hotel for happy hour, and got a hat trick.  The Clarion Hotel, born "The Mansion Inn" in 1957, was once the only game in town.  Before the Marriott, before the Hyatt, there was the Mansion Inn. So named due to its location right across the street from the former Governors Mansion, it has played host to presidents and visiting aristocracy, as well as some of the greatest stage actors from New York and LA . It may have lost a bit of its luster since its 1960's heyday (the carpet is downright garish, and the downstairs hallways where the bathroom is located, are eerily similar to the hallway in The Shining. . . you know the one with the twins? Redrum, Redrum), but it still has an old school style and grace that you won't find in the more modern super hotels.  It's easy to imagine Don Draper smoking a cigarette and hitting on a statuesque redhead at the end of the bar, and I like that about the place.  And my love for all things 60's chic aside, I like, nay, I love, their happy hour.  2 dollar draft beers (Shock Top, complete with an orange slice, and Coors Light), 2 dollar house wines, and 2.50 well drinks. You can't beat that with a stick. So, if you like good drinks at a good price, good service (thanks Dana!) and good single serving friends (the easiest strangers to meet are those who are traveling, 'cause everyone is a stranger to them), you'll like the Clarion Inn from 5 to 7pm, every day of the week.  And if you don't like those things, well, I don't think we can be friends anymore.

Part of why the old Governor's Mansion had a pool installed was because Gov. Pat Brown used to walk over in his swimming trunks and bathrobe to use the pool at the Clarion, and his staff decided it would be more dignified to install a pool than have the Governor walking around on the street in his bathrobe!

I must admit that despite living in Sacramento the vast majority of my life I have never been to that bar. Really interesting pick, now I'll have to check it out.

It's great you're writing about your experiences getting to know Sacramento. I hope you also get a chance to check out the bars and businesses that are Sacramento originals (in contrast to chain-hotel bars). Cheers!

I am planning on it. If you have any recommendations as to places I should check out, I'd love to hear them. The Clarion came down to the fact that I live two blocks away and they have a giant banner announcing "$2.00 Beers". I try to frequent locally owned establishments whenever possible.

So I found out that they are closing for this week due to a lack of bookings. It seems to me that they may be cutting off their nose to spite their face. I'm pretty sure that closing the restaurant and bar for a week isn't going to encourage new visitors to come, or current visitors to return. I'm no mathmatist, but it seems counterproductive to me. Not to mention how it hurts the good men and women who work as bartenders and waiters there-in. Please join me in voicing your displeasure.

I wish you thumbs downers would throw me a bone. I'm all about constructive criticism.

I didn't bother to vote yay or nay on this article but if I can speculate on some reasons why anyone would give you the thumbs down on this particular piece. The Sacpress is trying to establish itself as a community journalism project (that's my warped perception) not a personal blog. It's fantastic you found a place that sells cheap beer and has hallways but there is a bar on every block in Sacramento. It's really as if you are trying to usurp the audience of the Sacpress for your new meanderings. Maybe you should have just gone with an article on the history of the Clarion, not your chemical dependency at a cheap rate. This really sounds like the cheap and shameless promotion not unlike that of a Jack Young for a dwindling clientele. I can't speak for the rest of the Sacpress audience. I think discovering Sacramento is a good theme go with it, but seriously if I was a bettin' man' I don't think many people care or want to read that you like taco trucks. The Sacpress has the potential to take away the news monopoly the SacBee and the SNR have had for so long and gave it to the people, and they are writing about taco trucks.

Fair enough, and thanks for taking the time to respond. I especially like the "sells cheap beer and has hallways" line. I would argue that I'm not usurping anything with my new meanderings (great words both), I'm simply telling the story of my Sacramento experiences using my own voice. I grant you that I tend to go off on tangents and am a big part of my stories, but I never claimed to be a journalist, if I am it is very much of the gonzo variety. I don't think that SacPress will be able to usurp many readers from the SacBee and SNR with strictly "just the facts ma'am" journalism. Judging from the large number of comments and ratings that my taco truck post received, I think you may be wrong. Also, the taco truck story is a viable news story, SNR and The Sacramento Bee have both written about it in the past. Thanks for taking the time man, I appreciate the well thought out and well written criticism. I don't, however, know who Jack Young is. Also, if you don't think this is a proper venue for talking about ones own experiences, you probably aren't going to like my next post much. Feel free to drop a thumbs down, at least now I'll know why.

I'm with the "yay" crowd. Articles just talking about neat things one has discovered is, I think, an excellent use of this site. I like to hear the experiences of someone new to this town, who may have a fresh outlook on places that locals may just gloss over as part of the background. And yeah, there are quite a few advocates of taco trucks, both as blogging subjects, magazine articles, and political causes, so I think he's right on the money there.

I would encourage Lindol to keep working his way through Sacramento's plentiful dive bars. I'm curious to see what he thinks of the Nite Hawk or Henry's.

Many people I have come across have appreciated the taco truck piece...it brings a light-hearted, funny story instead of the consistent "dread" pieces the media portrays to the masses....sometimes you just want to smile. Great job...keep it up!

Mr. French,
Aside from playing Devil's Advocate, who cares? My opinion, write what you when you want, and be completely unapologetic about it. Would you really want everyone liking what you wrote? If you do then I suggest writing garbage like Pualo Coelho wrote and striving for the lowest common denominator. But you'd have to stoop pretty low to top the bell curve he created with The Alchemist. Your story got posted to the Facebook page btw, so your story is noteworthy to many of us in Sacrademento.
Let it rip.

J.S.- I certainly plan on it- And as I said already, I greatly appreciate constructive criticism. If everyone agrees with you you aren't saying anything of interest. What story are you referring to?

The thing I like about this series is that you're going places that a lot of people who read this site don't really consider. Whenever I become familair with a city, I think it's funny to look back at the places I went when I first discovered it. They're ineveitably different than the places I end up frequenting when I become more familiar. It's cool to see Sacramento discovered by someone with no bias towards anything. I mean, the Clarion bar?! Totally random but also awesome.
