Not Just Pretty in Pictures
Beautiful spa ads may have you believe that hot stone therapy is a gimmick for producing artistic photographs, implying it’s not a serious massage experience. The truth is, a massage utilizing stones can be incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating, more so than traditional massage.

How Does it Work?
Much like the spa pictures you see of people with dark, flat stones along their spine, the stones are warmed and then placed on the body while the therapist actively uses additional stones as an extension of their hand while they massage you. The placement of the stones can be aligned with chakras, meridians, and zones depending on the therapist’s training which can help increase the flow of energy through your body, as well as allow for a deeper relaxation of the muscles compared to traditional massage. Hot stone can also be an effective remedy for stress and anxiety.

When to Get a Hot Stone Massage?
The idea of a hot stone massage might only appeal to you in the winter, but the benefits should be enjoyed year-round. If your energy is low, if your stress levels are high, or if other forms of massage can’t get your muscles to release, hot stones in the hands of a caring therapist can work miracles.

How to Have a Great Experience
The effectiveness of a stone massage can vary with the skill of each therapist. They are longer and usually more expensive (due to additional preparation and cleanup), so it’s worth your while to find a therapist who specializes in them. Start with a referral, and before you invest in a hot stone massage, consider booking a Swedish or other similar massage first if the therapist is new to you. Ask how long a they have been performing hot stone and what their philosophy is around it. During the session, communicate with your therapist if the stones are too warm or the pressure is uncomfortable – a good therapist will always listen and respond to your needs.

My Personal Experience
One of my all-time favorite therapists gave me my first experience with hot stones. The session started off a bit awkward. She placed stones in a line on the table and then had me lay down on top of them, which took a try or two to get right. It was nothing like rocks under your sleeping bag on a camping trip; once I got settled into position it was quite comfortable. She then spent a minute or two selecting her rocks and getting them ready. While the larger rocks went to work on my back, she used medium sized rocks to enhance her massage technique and it didn’t take long for my mind to melt away. Sometimes she would leave a stone in a particular spot while she worked on another area – I liked the mini-stones between my toes! But the best part was the chilled stones she used on my face. They relieved the constant pressure I have in my sinuses. Afterwards I was completely relaxed, grounded, and very in touch with my body. I look forward to the next treatment!

Keep in mind that your own hot stone massage will probably be different. Every therapist has their own unique style.

I endure deep tissue massage therapy 2 a month and although it helps with chronic muscle stress issues I've had for a long time,it's not always enjoyable.
Hot Stone, on the other hand is the most wonderfully relaxing massage experience ever.I treat myself
a couple times a year.I highly recommend it!

Denise, I hear you! I think it's wonderful you find massage to be a helpful part of your health routine. I've experienced many a deep tissue massage as I have chronic knots in my shoulders from them staying up in my ears when I'm stressed (which is too often). Massage can certainly hurt on my tender shoulders, and I've found some therapists use more painful techniques than others. I've see a couple therapists now that I almost always walk away from feeling better than when I came in. I'm glad you've found someone you enjoy and trust that helps with your muscle stress! And I'm glad you treat yourself too with the occasional hot stone...so important to pamper!
