A Sacramento County garbage truck and a work van were involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident this morning along the 8500 block of Folsom Blvd. The accident seriously injured the driver of the garbage truck and killed the driver of the work van.

According to the Sacramento Police, preliminary witness reports indicate that the garbage truck was traveling west bound on Folsom Blvd. The van, traveling east bound on Folsom Blvd. traveled into the path of the garbage truck, hitting the garbage truck head on. The garbage truck then hit the overhang of a Pre-School coming to rest near the playground of the school. Fortunately the children were inside the school and were not harmed.

The van’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the garbage truck was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Sacramento Firefighters had to extricate both victims. It took Firefighters over 20 minutes to extricate the driver of the garbage truck.

Hydraulic oil and diesel from the garbage truck was leaking into the gutter and a Level 2 Haz Mat was requested. Firefighters from Sacramento Metro Fire also responded and the investigation into the exact cause of the accident is being conducted by the Sacramento Police Department.

My boyfriend works with the man that died this morning. "I just talked to him this morning.." he told me. How close to home this feels. This reminds me to cherish the time I have in this world, and remember that nothing in life is a guarantee. My heart is with the family that grieves today. I am so sorry for your loss.

I pulled up 10-15 seconds before this crash occured. Had my co worker and I not taken an extra minute or two out of our day this very well could have been him and me. When we pulled over there was 1 other person on the scene and it was the biggest reality check Ive ever had. My friend tried talking to the Dish Network Truck Driver while I frantically like others were calling the police. We waited and prayed for a outcome but unfourtatnly the wrong outcome happened and when the man was pulled out of the car ( In which the Sac Fire Department worked very fast to get him out with a serious of Drills, Saw,s and jaws of life) It seems he passed on. Its been hard to work all day because I cant get this out of my head. I pray tonight for both parties. I wont forget this as long as I live.

My husband worked with the man who passed away in this accident and it has hit especially close to home for him. These technicians work long, hard hours and carry a tremendous amount of stress and liability. This man worked tirelessly in a thankless profession to provide for his family. Our deepest condolences are with his wife, child, and the one on way. They are in our thoughts and prayers.
