Councilwoman Sandy Sheedy is opposing a proposed rule stating that city employees could be fired for leaking confidential information.

She said at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting the proposed rule would have a “chilling effect” on whistleblowers.

The City Council delayed a decision on the proposal.

The proposal Sheedy is opposing was drafted by City Attorney Eileen Teichert. It states that an “employee disclosing or causing to be disclosed confidential information to any unauthorized person may be subject to appropriate disciplinary action up to and including termination.”

Councilman Robbie Waters wanted Teichert to address confidentiality in a rule. His views on the current proposed language were unclear Tuesday night.

It's the whistleblowers that exposed the Nestle 'deal' and the Natomas debacle... And now the Council wants to punish them????

I can see why Robbie (hiccup) Waters would seek such a 'rule', for he's been exposed by the whole Natomas thing... But I'm sure this wasn't an original thought of his -- it was no doubt prodded by KJ himself because of the potential to dictate public info should the SMI pass if the courts allow it to proceed to ballot...

So much for 'transparency' in government....

Gee, I wonder who the city hall whistleblower could have been...wonder no more! And it was the city attorney who drafted the proposal. Obama, BTW, threatened the same tactic for his White House whistleblowers.

Maybe they should call it the "Stop Snitchin'" Rule?
