The Sacramento Kings introduced an exciting new program to benefit high schools in the greater Sacramento area Friday, January 22. Participating high schools will compete in the “Kings Size High School Challenge” to raise funds for their school.

“The Kings Size High School Challenge is a great vehicle for local high schools to raise funds for their school programs,” said Danette Leighton, vice president of marketing for Maloof Sports & Entertainment. “This program is the first of its kind for this community, and we hope to grow it to include even more schools next season.”

All participating schools attended a draft lottery event yesterday at the Kings Practice Facility, similar to the NBA’s draft lottery, where they drafted their Kings player “sponsor” and game date. The Kings player they draft will make a visit to their school in late January or early February to officially tip-off the program. For every ticket the school sells for its selected game, a percentage of the sale will benefit its desired high school programs.

Participating schools included: Granite Bay High School, Grant Union High School, Inderkum High School, Laguna Creek High School, Oakridge High School, Pleasant Grove High School, Ponderosa High School, Rio Americano High School, Rocklin High School, Sacramento Charter High School and Sheldon High School.

Schools will compete for the following: A trophy, access to use the Kings court at ARCO Arena and utilization of one suite at a Kings game during the 2009-10 or 2010-11 season. The overall winner of the program will also receive the coveted “Kings Cup” to showcase at its school for an entire year. Special in-game activities will also be included for each school on their selected game including a check presentation on the Kings court during a timeout and other elements such as additional in-game recognition and possible inclusion of their school mascot and pep band in the in-game show.

Results from lottery: School, Kings player that will visit school to tip-off program, and game date chosen in the draft order each school selected in-

2. Rocklin – Kevin Martin – Feb. 28 vs. LA Clippers

Thanks for the story. You do have an error in your reporting. Sacramento High School was closed in 2003. The school you are referring to is Sacramento CHARTER High School.

Too bad all the families and students in the traditional Sacramento High School (closed in 2003) neighborhoods don't get to participate. Especially since they pay for the facility and the $27 MILLION upgrades with their taxes.

St. HOPE is not Sac High
Sacramento Charter High School is not Sacramento High School
The continued occupation of Sacramento High School's rightful campus by this mayor's underperforming vanity school is a travesty.

His profile states his position and his affiliation. Also, the name of the school will be fixed and thanks to both of you for pointing that out.

Thanks Casey. Is it a holdover from traditional journalism to expect the affiliation revealed on the same page? Does SacPress have policy on this? Most people are not going to click to a different page to discover the connection.

As for Sac High, part of the illegal deal that Johnson arranged with SCUSD member who he helped place on the board and who were removed by outraged families/voters, was the continuation of the trappings, team name, colors (despite St. HOPE's uniforms), etc. when St. HOPE replaced Sac High. It's a sick joke on the whole community.
