The Sacramento City Council likes the idea of an ethics commission.

Councilmembers decided Tuesday to examine possibilities for a future ethics committee. The proposal to research ideas for an ethics commission came from the city’s Charter Review Committee.

Councilman Kevin McCarty said in a message after the meeting that he had suggested that the Charter Review Committee analyze ideas for an ethics commission.

Councilwoman Sandy Sheedy spoke in favor of the idea, saying that an ethics committee would be a way to ensure “sunshine and bright light.”

Underground tours in Old Sacramento are likely on the horizon.

The City Council unanimously decided Tuesday to loan the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation $185,000 to launch public guided tours of Old Sacramento’s underground sidewalks. The foundation expects to hold the tours on summer weekends.

Councilman Ray Tretheway called the underground sidewalks “a fantastic attraction.”

Whatever so called ethics commision they develop...it will have no authority...so it is a waste of time. What the city needs is a strict ethics ordinance with criminal sanctions.

Ray Tretheway will be the first one arrested for taking millions of dollars from developers and laundering it through the Sacramento Tree Foundation as donations to help trees.

Sac Tree OWNS Tretheway - Developers OWN SacTree = Developers pay and control Ray Tretheway.

Oh brother, what has made you so utterly blind to KJ's frauds and corruptions as to accuse someone as innocuous as Ray Tretheway of ANYTHING of similar proportion?????

Tretheway's main political error was bending to KJ's demand that he support balloting the SMI, after KJ went to his home and promised campaign support and forebearance of any attacks in this year's race... Of course, this was before the courts tossed the measure because it was so obviously flawed...

Btw, why don't you use your '2112' identification here??? We all know who you are, honey...

Cynics will say, " Ethics Commission? That's like giving a corpse an enema." Being an optimist, I say, "Yeah, but it couldn't hurt!"

It might seem easy to agree with you Brook, but the problem is the commission will be made up of political hacks and friends of those on the council. Otherwise they wont stand a chance of being appointed to the commision.

It does hurt.
Imagine you have a business, and you suspect, or detect, some employees are behaving unethically. Do you address them directly and fix the problem, or launch a new ethics department to police the suspected employees, and raise your costs to pay for it?
