Rob Turner, co-editor of Sactown Magazine, wrote what I found to be a truly inspired back page article in the Magazine's sixteen issue. So aptly titled "Meals on Wheels," the one-pager succintcly broke down the issue, the barriers, and the plan for allowing mobile food vendors to roam the streets of Sacramento. Personally, I have read the city ordinances but I still cannot quite understand the reasoning that prohibits such glorious eating establishments from taking root in our fine city. (Perhaps you can, so be it, but I really think we're missing out.) I chose to heed Rob Turner's advice and write to city council member and Vice Mayor Steve Cohn (as well as the editors of SacTown Magazine) in an effort to involve myself in the cause. You'll be pleased to know I did recieve a response from both-- that's right fellow Sacramentans, we do have a voice!
Here's my letter, just to prove I wrote one--
"To whom it may concern:
Born and raised in Sacramento and recent returned from Portland, OR, there is nothing that would please me more than becoming involved in a movement towards mobile food carts in Sacramento. A friend in Portland recently opened a food cart that has garnered attention across the nation, from features on Food Network to the LA Times (check him out! http://www.foodcartsportland.com/2009/05/22/whiffies-pie-cart/ ). His success has inspired me and a recent article in Sactown Magazine has provided the final impetus to try and become involved. My father, a recently laid-off chef, has been very supportive of my over zealous ideas to try and start a food cart and was very pragmatic in suggesting that I look into city ordinances and see what I can do to affect some change. With this in mind, I am here to ask what can I do to help get the ball rolling, or expedite the process should the veritable ball be in motion. Also, a big thank you to Rob Turner for his article “Meals on Wheels” (and the Grilled Cheese Grill is an amazing artery clogging experience). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated and I am ever so happy to see that local Sacramento politicians are supportive of a progressive idea for a rapidly expanding city; it feels great to be home. "
Now of course I realize I am not the first to support such a brilliant idea, nor will I be the last-- but I am bored, and despite a lack of capital, I do have free time and a reasonable amount of motivation.
I'm trying to become more involved, and so should other mobile food vendor enthusiasts in Sacramento. Diehard will and an ego tough enough to withstand belittlement and oversight are all grassroots movements really need, right? Other people are way more on top of their game than I, so check them out!
Perhaps a little impromptu sampling of the deliciousness at one of the city council meetings. A food vendor food fair in front of city hall chambers...And don't forget, election season is upon us...perhaps some of the many folks running for city council would be interested in your cause! Facebook page, email list and on we march!
And Ingrid! Love that I keep seeing your byline here. Nice.
*BTW just like San Francisco was serving great rich tasting coffee long before Seattle's Starbucks became a household name, the rest of world also has been doing the street vending thing long before the folks in the Pacific Northwest somehow got all the credit for 'discovering" it. Having lived in Southeast Asia I really miss the great street food.
