The WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) did not disappoint Sunday at Arco Arena with an action-packed card.

The first fight of the night was a battle that set the stage with Will Campuzano’s bloody victory over Coty Wheeler. Charlie Valencia had a split-decision win over Akitoshi Tamura. Iranian Olympian Kamal Shalorus showed his stand-up skills winning by decision over Dave Jansen. Mike Brown had an easy dominating victory over Anthony Morrison in the first round.

In the main event, Jamie Varner lost his lightweight championship belt to Benson Henderson with a submission in the third round.

Even though Urijah Faber (23-3) versus Raphael Assuncao (14-2) was not the main event on paper, most of the 10,000-plus fans in attendance showed up in support of Sacramento’s own California kid. He had his diverse fan base consisting of young girls, soccer moms and older men all exploding into cheers as the screens showed him walking out from the locker room area. The already energetic Arco Arena jumped up another level as Tupac’s "California Love" started playing.

Faber was all smiles walking out to the overwhelming support of the hometown crowd.

“I’m so thankful for my fans,” Faber said the night before the fight. "I’m going to give them what they want to see.”

Knowing Faber for his creative moves, I asked him what we should look out for. “Something like a flying elbow,” he said, which was close to the running overhand right he threw in the first round.

His opponent was no walk in the park. Assuncao, ranked fifth in the world with a strong background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, gave Faber a challenge. From the judges' score cards he won the first round. Faber also showed his high level of Jiu-Jitsu skills that made Raphael Assuncao submit from a rear naked choke after bringing him down with a straight right hand with 1:21 left in the third round.

Faber's victory over Assuncao set up what will probably be WEC’s first pay-per-view card, which will match up Faber versus the Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo. It will be a fight everybody will want to see and something Faber has been waiting for.

“In my mind, that’s my belt,” he said after his victory over Assuncao, which got the crowd roaring.

The fight will most likely be back in Sacramento, which will give Faber's Sacramento fans something to look forward to.

I got to meet some of the fighters at 24 hour fitness downtown. I could tell they were serious fighters by their cauliflower ears! One guy had lost 7 pounds and was busy steaming to lose another 7 pounds before the fight. Now that is dedication!
