Sacramento Press is really great. Perhaps a community calendar section where people could post upcoming events would be nice. You've done a good job with this.

Glad you like our site. You'll often find that since our reporting is covering local issues the community is often very knowledgeable about the stories on our site and on many occasions corrections have been made by our readers. Also before content is laid out on the front page it is read and some fact checking is done. If such a hoax were to make it through our system we would make a correction and do so on the front page, not in the dark corner of our site somewhere. Still these is the potential for something like that to happen. Great comment, and also great icon, I love Magritte!

Neat concept! I'm a bit curious about one thing, though, if this is to be the most comprehensive, local news source in Sacto... how do you go about quality control in the articles that get published on the front page? By that, I mean how would you prevent something like this http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090511/entertainment/wikipedia_hoaxer from happening, if you're not doing your typical side-by-side edits with your, um, blogger-turned-reporter? Do you have minions, err, fact-checker interns perusing the articles? At any rate, keep up the good work and congrats on a solid site!

I can't even begin to tell you how cool this is! This area has been lacking real "local" news since the Sacramento Union went under the first time. I wish every news organization was run like this. Easy to use, interactive, and just local stuff we care about. Good job on the sports too! I like to see those kinds of stories because I watch ESPN for all the national stuff anyhow, but even Sac Bee does a crappy job with "our sports news". Keep it up!

I stumbled upon your site via facebook (yes your ad buy seems to be working) from an audience perspective this site is a great idea (I shared it on facebook even). from a tech and web design perspective I think the site is definitely well executed and as someone who has had a few start ups, congrats on the launch and release, I know getting it done and launched is ALWAYS the hardest part. I like wikis, what would you use a wiki for on The Sacramento Press? As for registration, perhaps I do not understand your point fully, but it is useful for us to be able to contact those who contribute to conversations and write for us. It helps make our community better.

Well, I noticed that you are a web developer, so I won't be shy in answering your question. The back end is using JavaEE, JBOSS, MySQL, Spring, and Hibernate. I worked with EJBs in the past and I would never recommend using those legacy EJBs, however I think Sun did a great job with the new JavaEE spec and their "lightweight" EJBs. As for the front end, we are using the awesome YUI framework. There is a lot of DHTML and Ajax used in this site and we are leveraging all of that through YUI.
