The Sacramento Press will be the most comprehensive, local news source and information center for the Sacramento Metropolitan Area.

We are a strictly online newspaper. Our writers are primarily volunteer Community Contributors.

We combined the best tools on the web and built an outstanding platform from scratch. This platform enables people to tell stories about their neighborhoods and have thoughtful conversations about these stories. Then our editors place the best content on the front page and section pages to highlight great work.

The casual experience is like a traditional newspaper. We take pride in putting the content front and center. We also take pride in making our tools for rating content, leaving comments, and flagging inappropriate content easy to find and easy to use. For those who are web savvy, we offer all the tools for a power user to aggregate (rss), categorize (tags), and dig deeper with our "storyline" button.

We are a for profit business, but we consider ourselves a public trust. The original concept of the corporation was a balance between allowing people to join together for a common goal with some profit potential and demanding that the corporation provide a public service to the nation. In our case, we will provide valuable services to the neighborhoods of Sacramento while showing that this kind of community journalism can be profitable.

Thanks Brent. Hmm, you choose the "ambiguous" icon. Not sure if its "Ricky Martin", not sure if its "Ellen Degeneres".

Sleeping is for wimps. Just kidding! Launching has definitely cut my sleep in half though and I wasn't quite getting much to begin with. These days I also tend to post and create a new front page at around 1am, so every night is a late night with the Press.

Well, I noticed that you are a web developer, so I won't be shy in answering your question. The back end is using JavaEE, JBOSS, MySQL, Spring, and Hibernate. I worked with EJBs in the past and I would never recommend using those legacy EJBs, however I think Sun did a great job with the new JavaEE spec and their "lightweight" EJBs. As for the front end, we are using the awesome YUI framework. There is a lot of DHTML and Ajax used in this site and we are leveraging all of that through YUI.

And I'm a little late responding to your comment! So busy here. Thank you for your encouraging words. We're really proud of our design and the fact that it's Web 2.0 without all the cliche Web 2.0 style.

Just found you guys and I'm excited to see the concept develop more. I've been publishing local news in Rancho Cordova online for over a year now and have received a great response. I'd love to grab a coffee sometime to chat. Take Care.

Coffee is a must. You should come by our office, we'd love to chat. We've been in the process of building this site for over two years and have had the idea for it for over 3 years.

Hi All, I'm interested in developing a national map of local citizen-driven press. I'll be sure to include you. Perhaps you might consider a GeoRSS story feed?

you need a wiki, we all need a wiki, (wikimapia?), also links page, etc. ;)

also, non-compulsive registration to scrivere ;)

I like wikis, what would you use a wiki for on The Sacramento Press?

As for registration, perhaps I do not understand your point fully, but it is useful for us to be able to contact those who contribute to conversations and write for us. It helps make our community better.

I stumbled upon your site via facebook (yes your ad buy seems to be working) from an audience perspective this site is a great idea (I shared it on facebook even). from a tech and web design perspective I think the site is definitely well executed and as someone who has had a few start ups, congrats on the launch and release, I know getting it done and launched is ALWAYS the hardest part.

Keep on persevering, and good luck.

I'll be reading your site and referring others often.

hey just found out about you guys, excellent site! Forgive my ignorance, but can we submit a story/story idea, if so, how? And is there a section for posting volunteer opportunities? thanks.

The quick answer is click "sign up" above the masthead.

After signing up click the "write" button just above the masthead.

When you write a story about volunteering opportunities, just tag the story "volunteer opportunities."

To learn more about tags and writing for our community click the "help" button in the green section list just below the masthead.

I can't even begin to tell you how cool this is! This area has been lacking real "local" news since the Sacramento Union went under the first time. I wish every news organization was run like this. Easy to use, interactive, and just local stuff we care about. Good job on the sports too! I like to see those kinds of stories because I watch ESPN for all the national stuff anyhow, but even Sac Bee does a crappy job with "our sports news". Keep it up!

This is the future of the local newspaper. I appreciate your elegant styling. I follow you on Twitte, which keeps me up-to-date. However, I'd appreciate it if you provided an RSS button on the front page; I'd like to include you in my news aggregator.

Neat concept! I'm a bit curious about one thing, though, if this is to be the most comprehensive, local news source in Sacto... how do you go about quality control in the articles that get published on the front page? By that, I mean how would you prevent something like this http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/090511/entertainment/wikipedia_hoaxer from happening, if you're not doing your typical side-by-side edits with your, um, blogger-turned-reporter? Do you have minions, err, fact-checker interns perusing the articles? At any rate, keep up the good work and congrats on a solid site!

Glad you like our site. You'll often find that since our reporting is covering local issues the community is often very knowledgeable about the stories on our site and on many occasions corrections have been made by our readers.

Also before content is laid out on the front page it is read and some fact checking is done. If such a hoax were to make it through our system we would make a correction and do so on the front page, not in the dark corner of our site somewhere. Still these is the potential for something like that to happen. Great comment, and also great icon, I love Magritte!
