I was out and about the day before Christmas Eve and as usual looking for something to eat when I came across Sweetwater Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant stands on a decent piece of midtown real estate with a good amount of foot traffic through the neighborhood.

Upon walking in you are immediately facing the bar. Since there is no podium or hostess we sat ourselves and our server Jo Beth promptly came by with menus. One of the first things I noticed was the extremely bright lights which took so much away from what would have otherwise been a very welcoming room. I’ve been in emergency rooms more dimly lit.

The crowd was quiet and average at the bar most likely due to the fact it was so close to Christmas. As Jo Beth asked for our drink order she explained Happy Hour consisted of $3 draft beers, wines and well drinks. There was also a small list of appetizers available for $5. The dinner menu was modestly priced with the most inexpensive entree starting at $11.95 for the Roasted Pumpkin Lasagna. The most expensive entrée you will find is a Flat Iron Steak priced at $17.95.

We ordered the Spinach Artichoke Dip, Big Easy Shrimp and Pesto and Bleu Cheese topped shoestring fries. The spinach dip was overly rich and lacked flavor other than the thick layers of butter. I actually sent it back which I almost never do. I just had no desire to continue chewing after the first bite violated my tongue. The pesto and bleu cheese fries had a wonderful combination of flavors and I could absolutely see how they all come together, I just think it could have used more of both the bleu cheese and the pesto. The Big Easy Shrimp appetizer was delicious! Large shrimp made with a dark bourbon sauce (bourbon, chili oil, garlic and worcestershire) served alongside ciabatta slices.

Overall my experience at Sweetwater didn’t wow me nearly enough to warrant a return visit, but this is only my humble opinion. Keep in mind however there is something to be said about entering a building with no real expectations and still leaving somewhat dissatisfied.

Sweetwater is located at 1901 S Street downtown Sacramento. Happy Hour is 2pm – closing Sunday – Wednesday and 2-6pm Thursday and Friday. The wine list is fairly inexpensive ranging from $6-$11 per glass. Kids menus are available and all major credit cards are accepted. Parking is available on the street out front or on the side streets.
As always, please know I am in no way affiliated with this or any restaurant I review. My goal is to go out and slowly experience different aspects of the Sacramento dining scene then share those experiences with you.
