When I first heard that the Sacramento Kings would be offering “dollar beer night” on its nationally televised Wednesday night home game as a promotion to bring in more fans, it was surprisingly troublesome to learn on many levels. As someone who is a community advocate and supporter of the organization MADD, this to me has the makings of irresponsibility written all over it, similar to letting a drunk tend bar. The Kings for all that can be said about their play on the court and lack of home attendance, should not display such gimmicky promotions that will encourage people to engage in risky drinking behavior just for a quick buck. Granted buying beer is an option to fans and no one’s arm is being twisted to indulge on the dollar adult beverages, however, you would think that the Kings could come up with something a bit cleverer this holiday season. This is the time of year when you find people are drinking at holiday after holiday party and in these economic times who needs more enticing.

The Kings seem to forget that they essentially fired one of their former head coaches for a DUI offense just a few short years ago. The area surrounding Arco Arena is one that dockets a high number of drunk driver arrests within Sacramento. The bottom line of this is it just doesn’t sound right when the Kings should be doing else to promote a more family fun atmosphere such as family night for a dollar, now how’s that for a promotion.

I predict that the King's will choke tonight. Most people will be getting tanked before the half-time cut-off and taking to the streets because a King of Queens rerun is better than watching that team.

You won't see me out driving around.

Wow...you must not watch any of the games, because the Kings have one of the most exciting players in the league. Tyreke Evans is only 20-years old and worth every dollar.

To Rashaad - I undertand your concern with people driving drunk...never a good idea. But the Kings fired their head coach because they won 17 games.

You were obviously wrong about the Kings choking!

The Kings orginization has been extremely creative in coming up with unique promotions to add value to the ticket price: family packs that inclue food, wine and cheese packages, the holiday offers that include memerabilia, and yes, $1 beer night. And based on the success of last night, they should do it again! There is always a designated driver booth on the concourse, and I heard that extra security was hired and additional taxis were called. Yes, this type of promotion is typically designated for baseball or hockey games. But after an incident-free evening and a full house at Arco (and fantastic representation on ESPN by the team AND the fans), what other choice do they have?

Please get off of your high horse. They offer beer at every game and are cutting off sales at the end of halftime. The bottom line is the Maloofs run a business and need to do whatever they can to make it profitable again. That starts with getting people in the seats and giving them a chance to see this new exciting team. I have 4 friends going with me tonight that haven't been to a game yet this year so it looks like it worked. Sports teams all across the country run similar promotions in fact the one across the river does. Get a sober driver or take a cab. It's called personal responsibility and that's up to us not the Maloofs.

Well the Kings didn't get there sellout as planned but the team did win the game in front of 16,000 and there were no reported alcohol arrests made in shaping up for a positive night overall.
