Dragonfly Restaurant has closed its doors after five years in Midtown.

Owners Glenn and Rosa Rivera-Lew quietly closed the Asian-fusion restaurant at least two weeks ago. They are now considering other options for the 3,500-square-foot space at 1809 Capitol Ave., whose lease they still own, said Ernesto Jimenez, an owner of the building and Zocalo, the restaurant next door.

Dragonfly — whose menu included sushi, noodles and tapas such as sesame seed cones and taro chips — struggled for some time.

"That's a sad one for us," said Rob Kerth, executive director of the Midtown Business Association. "I think they just couldn't draw enough people in to keep it going."

Dragonfly opened about a month after Zocalo in 2004 after Jimenez and building co-owner Ron Vrilakas, an architect, redeveloped the 1920s-era Arnold Brothers Building. The space, originally built as a warehouse for car repairs, features 18-foot ceilings and outdoor dining.

A sign on Dragonfly's door says a new business is expected to open early next year. It's too early to know whether the Lews will change the concept and resume operation, transfer the lease to a new operator or bring in new partners or investors, Jimenez said.

"He (Lew) has some great ideas in the works," Jimenez said.

The Lews operate a restaurant at Arden Fair and operated Fusions restaurant in Davis for seven years. They could not be reached for comment.

That's sad, but the reality is there are way too many restaurants in downtown/Midtown and too few diners in this economy. Many people now eat and drink at home these days. I'm surprised more restaurants in that area haven't closed their doors. January, February (Valentine's Day being the exception) and March traditionally are the slowest restaurant months so there may be more to come.

I never seemed to see people there, so this is totally not shocking.

They should come back and try for a new concept. How many sushi/asian restaurants can you fit on the grid, honestly?

Ate there a few times and it was sub-par. Keep up with the competition or go away.

It is a beautiful sparse restaurant. I look forward to what goes in next.

It isn't too many restaurant as the traffic at Zocala next door documents. Next put something in the market wants instead of something trendy or the owners 'think' Sacramento is ready for.

That block has not been a draw for locals for a long time. Mr. Kerth and his friends at MBA might want to take note of this closing. It used to be good but the quality of food and service declined over time. In addition, Zocalo has driven off almost all local patrons as the ick factor thanks to Zocalo keeps many nearby residents away. I'm surprised Paesanos is still doing well - their food is good and the Virga family knows the restaurant business and are good neighbors. I went to Dragonfly a few times when they were new but as the block got more popular with non-locals the less fun it became. As a midtown resident, I go out of my way to avoid 18th & Capitol.

that area seems to house many successful businesses. I remember as a child playing around the big tree in front of Java CIty and last weekend I met some friends at 58 degrees. I live close by and there was no "ick factor" for me.
