We are all writers here at The Sacramento Press, so we understand the concept of "pushing the deadline." Writers are born procrastinators.

But time is running out to enter the The Sacramento Press Pro-Am Journalism Open - it ends this Saturday!

If you post your story before midnight on Halloween, you will be eligible for some great prizes, including a weekend at Squaw Valley (with dinner at Plump Jack). We're offering prizes from $100-500 for the best contributions to the site, with other prizes including custom reporters' kits, complete with a Sacramento Press-branded digital voice recorder.

But this isn't just about prizes - those are to get your attention, and award good work.

The Sacramento Press is about something bigger. Starting conversations - and keeping them going.

The conversation starts with your story. You can write about nearly anything, as long as it is about people, places, ideas, conflicts and events in the Sacramento area. The idea is to get residents to write about the things that concern all of us - or perhaps just a few of us.

The more local, the better.

Come join us at The Sacramento Press in reinventing journalism in a way that serves the ordinary citizen in difficult times.

And do it this week! Visit sacramentopress.com/open for all the details about the Sacramento Press Journalism Open.

Hi Tamaradorris, I see that you don't have an answer yet so I would assume it is the same word limit as the rest of the articles that have a 20,000 "character" limit. If this is wrong I hope they will correct me and then we will both know. Write On!

You are correct. But you are welcome to break your story up over several articles.

I am a relatively progressive humane rights activist born, bred and raised in Sacramento. On a good day I am a creative writer. I have blogs and groups that I work with on an on-going basdis. Some of them I am the Moderator for these days.

I posted an article awhile back in my own website:
Capitalism: A Too Expensive Love Story: by Peter S. Lopez

Any feedback?

I found this site after a surprise postcard arrived about the First Pro-Am contest last week. Missed your deadline, darn it (procrastination is my middle name). Logged in for the first time this morning and joined immediately... kudos to everyone making SacramentoPress.com possible. Brilliant concept, beautifully executed. The Bee and SN&R could learn a thing or two from your model.

Started a draft for my first article (about flood danger and broken levees here in Sacto). Will post it soon.

Meanwhile, here's hoping everyone had a happy Halloween! Stop by our YouTube Halloween video (shot here in the heart of Midtown): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HQfPnysR4g
