Did you ever wonder how much of Wicca can be traced to the Celts? Wicca is a religion based on ancient northern European Pagan beliefs in a fertility Goddess and her consort a horned God. The religion is a modern creation and some of its sources pre-date the Christian era by many centuries. Most Wiccans do not believe that their religion is a direct continuous descendent of this earlier religion. They see it as a modern reconstruction.

This is what Joanna Hautin-Mayer says: "We know tragically little about the actual religious expressions of the ancient Celts. We have a few myths and legends, but very little archeological evidence to support our theories. We have no written records of their actual forms of worship, and the accounts of their culture and beliefs written by their contemporaries are often highly biased and of questionable historical worth."

This is what Silver RavenWolf in 1998 relates about the Wicca culture: "Wicca, as you practice the religion today, is a new religion, barely fifty years old. The techniques you use at present are not entirely what your elders practiced even thirty years ago. Of course, threads of 'what was' weave through the tapestry of 'what is now.' ...in no way can we replicate to perfection the precise circumstances of environment, society, culture, religion and magick a hundred years ago, or a thousand. Why would we want to? The idea is to go forward with the knowledge of the past, tempered by the tools of our own age."

Writings that formed the basic foundation of Wicca are as follows:

Charles Leland (1824-1903) published a book in 1899: Aradia: Gospel of the Witches. 8 Leland was the founder of the Gypsy Lore Society, editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin, and a prolific author and folklorist. Aradia deals mainly with the Goddess Diana. It is presented as an ancient document which recorded the doctrines of La Vecchia Religione (The Old Religion) -- Italian witchcraft. Leland claims to have received the information from an Italian strega (sorceress) named Maddalena. How much of this is a valid account of La Vecchia Religione is anyone's guess. However, the book played a significant role in the later development of modern-day Neopaganism.
Margaret Murray (1863 - 1963) authored The Witch Cult in Western Europe and The God of the Witches. 6 These books promoted the concept that some of the Witches who were exterminated by Roman Catholics and Protestants during the "Burning Times" (circa 1450-1792) were remnants of an earlier, organized, and dominant pre-Christian religion in Europe. Her writings have not been well received by anthropologists. However, they were very influential in providing background material for the Neopagan traditions.
Gerald Gardner (1884 - 1964), a British civil servant, who: has written that he joined an existing Wiccan Coven in 1939, taking the (then) usual vows of secrecy
persuaded the coven to let him write a book in 1949 about Wicca in the form of a novel, High Magic's Aid. He carefully revealed a few of the Old Religion's beliefs and the historical persecutions that they endured.
added many rituals, symbols, concepts and elements from ceremonial magick, Freemasonry and other sources to "flesh out" the coven's beliefs and practices, most of which had been long forgotten.
wrote Witchcraft Today in 1954 in which he described additional details about the faith.
wrote The Meaning of Witchcraft which described in detail the history of Wicca in Northern Europe.

As you can see, there is a lot to learn about the Wicca culture and religion, so now that I have been to Witchapalooza, I have met several witches that are willing to be interviewed. HPI Meeting at Swabbies Bar & Grill
October 4, 2009, Sunday: Shannon 'Ms. Macabre' McCabe, Chantal Apodoca, Natalie Black and I, needed to have a quick meeting about the upcoming HPI Vampire Halloween Ball, so we all decided to meet at Swabbies, along the Sacramento River. We discussed our upcoming plans over 2 pitchers of beer. The band that was playing was called Atomic Kings. The lead singer Vinnie Pantallioni announced the Vampire Ball to the crowd. Shannon, Chantal and I, passed around promotional business cards for the Ball and the Macabre Hearse Tours. The Atomic Kings www.myspace.com/atomickings are really good and played versatile music such as Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash; Born on the Bayou - Credence Clearwater Revival; Back in the USSR by the Beatles; Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon and Lips like Sugar by Echo & the Bunnymen. Atomic Breeze are former members of the 80s rock band called Steel Breeze. Steel Breeze sang the song "You Don't Want Me Anymore". While the band sang Lips like Sugar, Shannon was busy dancing with a 72 year old man. I was busy talking with Andrea Denny about her paranormal stories in Fresno. We also had Rolda.org calendars and postcards to hand out, this was beneficial for the homeless stray animals of Romania that Shannon and I are advocates for. All in all I had a great, great time.

10/11/09: Went back to Witchapalooza! Day started off good, one of the ladies that put this on named Francine Ures had a cool witch costume and I stepped on her dress and ripped it. Sorry Francine. Then I interviewed Malcolm McDowell, Actor and accidentally called him Roddy McDowell, that was embarrassing. Later Shannon McCabe and I interviewed the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Kristy Swanson, both interviews were smooth, except for the flub I did with Malcolm.

Interview with Malcolm McDowell by Paul Dale Roberts:
Malcolm and I talked about Clockwork Orange being a classic movie and that one day there will be a sequel. We discussed the greatness of Kubrick. Malcolm talked about how he prepares for a role and studies scripts. He talked about how he played a Russian serial killer/pedophile and how he didn’t like this role, because of the extreme negativity of the character. He tells me that he manages to shake off the character before reaching home. He says it is good to keep an open mind and never make any concrete choices when selecting a role. After the interview, I shook hands with Malcolm and I was glad he did not chase me away after I called him Roddy.

Interview with Kristy Swanson by Shannon McCabe/Paul Dale Roberts:
We asked Kristy how she liked playing the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she loved it. She also loves being part of history with this icon character that will live on forever in comic books, TV and movies. She talks about her upcoming movie “What if” with Kevin Sorbo. It will come out in February. Carol Gillis, our 3000 year old vampire wanted to know how she liked working with Rudger Hauer – The Vampire King. Kristy loved working with Rudger and thinks he is a talented actor. Kristy has a lot of fond memories of the Buffy movie and didn’t know who Edward Cullen of Twilight was when I asked her if she would stake Edward. She responded: ‘who is that?” Kristy says she believes in ghosts and vampires. Her favorite horror movie is Jaws. Kristy tells us that when she had an apartment in Hollywood, the house alarm would be shut off, but for some reason it would go off by itself. She would wake up to strange noises in the apartment and her hairdresser moved by it self. Kristy was fun to interview and afterwards Shan and I took a picture with her.
