Firefighters from Sacramento Fire Station #30 in North Natomas made an unusual rescue yesterday. A man called and said that he had just driven away from his home, when about three blocks later he heard “a meowing” noise coming from inside the engine area of his car. He immediately pulled over and lifted his hood. He heard what sounded like a cat somewhere inside the engine compartment.

Engine #30 responded and to everyone’s surprise, they found this little kitten tucked up under the car’s radiator. Fortunately he was safely removed and uninjured! The Firefighters from Engine #30 took the kitten back to their fire house where they bathed him and gave him some food and water.

Our Fire Dispatchers have affectionately named the young kitten, “Dip Stick!” Dip Stick is now awaiting adoption at the City of Sacramento’s Animal Shelter. You can adopt Dip Stick or other deserving animals by contacting the Animal Shelter at (916) 808-7387 between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Tuesday through Friday and 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. on Saturdays...

It is a shame when these "heroes" do one of the most common things a animal control officer does everyday and they make news and everyone says yay!! Animal Control Officers get no respect, little pay, little support from the people they serve, no training or equipment yet continue to risk thier safety saving the lives of animals on a daily basis and get no recognition. Its just a shame, these "heroes" hang around all day in thier movie theaters and lounges waiting to go cruise around in thier shiny rides, lift wieghts, cook and go shopping, why do you think they chose to respond to this call??? they were bored...

If there are compelling stories to tell about animal control officers we would love to have them on our site. The above article was written by Jim Doucette a public information officer for the Sacramento Fire Department, he is not a paid staff writer for The Sacramento Press.

Since our site is free and open to contributions from the public, you can do this easily without any editorial scrutiny, just as the above article was posted. Dear Ballsout:

You're absolutely right. Next time my house is on fire or when I need someone to run inside an inferno to rescue a baby, I won't get one of these TV-watching "heroes." I'll call Animal Control!

Wow, pretty harsh review of this story by "ballsout14" Gotta say you are dead wrong on this one. Having been a firefigher for over 20 years, I've heard a lot (too much) about the misconception that we shop, cook, workout and "ride around in shiny trucks". I can't blame you if you are unaware of what we do daily, but until you do, perhaps you can hold your comments and acidic tone. Firefighters rarely "sit around" and do nothing. We are usually lucky to eat on time, go through rigorous training year round to keep our skills fresh, and working out is part of our unwind time, as well as to requalify physically to keep our jobs. By the way I am a female lieutenant. My guys work their butts off. Can't you just take the story as it is, a good story? We've given up the glory plenty of times to the cops who got there first, etc. We're not in it for the glory, just the feeling of helping. Sorry you can't appreciate that. And I must say, it sounds like you may be a pretty angry person no matter what I might say.
Go ride with your local department and you'll see what I mean..Good Luck.

Ballsout, did you know that you anyone can request to go on a ride along with the fire department? I spent 24 hours with Oak Park Station 6 for a story and went on more than 20 calls with them. During those 24 hours they were never bored and barely had time to even sleep! I'm sure if you contacted Jim Doucette he would be more than happy to arrange this for you.

fire dept., animal control, your local police, your sherriffs, rangers, game wardens , all these and more deserve thank yous whether they are helping a poor animal, a lost child or senior citizen with
alzhimers, and then there are the volunteers (like my son) that really bust butt to help in what ever situation is necessary-- they would also like to know they are appreciated . take the time to say thanks once in a while-- it's really appreciated.

Every year, $1.3 billion in taxpayer money is wasted trying to save kittens!
